One of the discouraging parts for myself...
The season started for me today. I checked yesterday around 6PM EST, and nothing was flowing.
Woke up, went to check my tank, I started hearing a hissing sound as I got close. It was completely...
Was hoping some of this rain /40-degree temperature would cause some flow (after the recent cooler weather), I have three 3/16's runs in my woods, and they have barely given me a drip this week.
...
@Everyone - thank you very much, I was hoping this was the case. My plan will be to store this in the freezer (probably looking at 6-8% concentrate).
I purchased the RB10 RO bucket.
Thanks...
This is the first year I will be using RO to cut down on my boiling.
I am a small scale hobbyist (50-60taps 3/16th gravity).
Say I RO my sap from 2% to 6-8% - can I store this concentrated...
Yes indeed. This weather has been crazy, we had a thunderstorm here in Eastern KY last Friday.
Wednesday is hopefully the start to better sappin days :).
No, I really considered going, but just couldn't carve the time to go. I think it would have been helpful.
Yeah, I keep hoping the forecast will change towards the cold :) - Like you, I keep...
I tapped a little early this year - kind of went with the trend (a lot of Kentucky farms seemed to be getting started early, and thought I would follow).
Looking at it now, wish I would have...
Yeah, I think it is due to number of taps/pressure. I am going to modify that run to include some tree's a left out later tomorrow and see if that improves.
It is warming up today and tomorrow...
needle-nose with tubing covering the teeth - that is a great idea!
Thanks all - I also echo esetter's appreciation for the help received here.
I did find it interesting, on the lateral that is not doing as well. the very first tap, I can see sap in the line, but...
Today was a good day.
My first run on 3/16th tubing, I was a little discouraged that I had done something incorrect yesterday (I expected a little run), but today it came and I was beyond excited....
Hello,
I purchased a new Polyethylene drum for sap collection. It is food grade. Upon receiving this, there was a very strong plastic odor within the drum itself. I have used vinegar and baking...
@maple flats - Thank you, makes sense. I think I have my first run tight, but not too tight. I didn't want to make it so tight that when I installed the T's, I would fear the tubing would pull off....
I ran my first line yesterday.
I went back up today and started from the top and tighten the line up. Is there a good rule of thumb for how tight the line should be?
When you install the T's...
Thanks 220, I fully agree. I have probably have watched every tubing video I could find on youtube, it has given me a bit more confidence towards what I will be doing. The setup does not look too...
Thanks all for the great replies / information.
Does anyone have a picture of using a hallow core rope at the end? I was trying to get a visual of this but haven't been able to find one.
Thank you, super sapper,
This may be a very dumb question, but when you say tighten - I am imagining tieing the 3/16 tubing around the highest elevation tree (almost in a knot), then zig-zagging...
For the T that is 3/16 x 3/16 x5/16, is that almost impossible to attach to a lateral line without a two-handed tool?
If I were taping only 20-30 trees on a mountainside, would it be...
Thank you for the reply maple flats,
I have so many questions, so I will try and keep them simple.
Are you saying use 3/16 mainline with 5/16 taps and drops? This kind of throws me off, but I...
But, I am already excited for my second year. I went up through my mountainside yesterday and was trying to get an idea of how and what I would do this year. Late November early December depending on...
Wow what an offer! This being my first year, I am not able to store more than around 40 gallons at a time - and I am at full capacity myself. I also am using an outside arch, so I probably will not...
Thanks for the reply. My problem is that I store 5-gallon buckets in the freezer, the ice in the picture is really about 9/10 of the sap from one bucket. It wasn't a soft freeze, the whole bucket was...
Maybe it is best described as maple whisky flavor. I finally found another post where someone had described something similar. At least I do not feel alone :).
Today should be a really good run -...
Thank you!
I sat the buckets outside overnight, and they were thawed enough for me to boil.
I am a bit disappointed in my batch though. I did everything like I did last time. My first batch has...
