So currently I run a 2x4 in a 12x12 shed and my original idea was to exhaust my steam out the smoke stack to help lower my exhaust temps and cool embers. Plus it would only have one hole through the...
You can buy a pre coiled stainless tubing from the brewing world that is just about the same cost as buying your own and bending. I bought one this year and ran it from my preheat pan down into my...
My hydrometer has a thin connection line to the top of the tube, to tell if the scale has moved. maybe look for on of similar construction and compare the two.
I started tapping reds three years ago, just to see what their performance is on buckets and to test the taste. Like everything in nature there is no one rule that fits everything. I have a red maple...
A 2x3 for 16 taps will work fine. and at the price that is very good. I have built four arches/pans from 12"x 24" to 24" x 52". Everyone will make suggestions on too big, too small, or to use an RO...
At say 35f or 2c how long can you safely store sap before it goes bad?
Has anyone seen any research papers on sap storage temp and microbes growth?
Man good looking rig.
The flames have to be touching the bottom of the pan. Cut the openings just big enough to let the flames hit the bottom you can even seal the pan with gasket. And add some forced air. If your trying...
I like the door test I will have to try it. The fan imbalance was the first thing I checked. When the pan is shaking pretty violently the fan is smooth as a cucumber... thank you for the quick...
the pan is sitting on gasket and is airtight in the area.
So i built a new 24"x52" pan and oil tank arch. It is boiling very well. But after an hour or so when everything is good and hot. The pan will setup a vibration resonance and literally start shaking....
So live and keep on learning. I had a slight air gap in the front of the pan. And I had some mineral wool that turned to glass like substance after the first boil. So I bought some ceramic fiber...
So my wife and i collect about 25 gallons of from our 47 taps, and fired up the evaporator for the first time. i got to learn a lot of things one this machine runs hot/efficient. I didn't run it...
Just a thought if it is only lasting one year and for the cost of ceramic. Why not but a bundle of mineral wool for $25-30 from a big box store, each bundle would insulate your doors for a couple...
Thanks. I will post some boiling pictures. If the weather holds true I will be tapping this weekend.
Well it is finally finished. Now I just need to set it up in the make shift shack. It will be more fun to than the barrel evaporator was.206732067420675
I accomplished some more on the arch/ pan. The arch is pretty much finished so now i working on the pan. The pan is my least favorite part. darn SS warping. Oh well it should be done in the next...
The bigger the better. If you add a little insulation to the door it won't lose any heat. The bigger the door the less chance of an issue when firing. Just my two cents
Buckeye,
I am not mortaring them this year because i need to move the evaporator around. I hope when I get it in a more permanent place this summer I will be able to mortar the bricks.
Well the...

Well insulation is mostly done. I dont like bricking but I have them all trimmed and ready to go in. I am making a few bars to hold the brick in place. We finally got winter...
The reason I didn't start from scratch was that the oil tank was free.
There isn't plans for an ash clean out. I can just use the shop vac every couple boils to clear the ash. Last year I...
First question to answer is can you weld or solder it if the answer is yes then it will be just fine
Actually it will be better than 22 or 20 gauge. 24 gauge is what the amish SS shop near me...
Welded up my stack transition. And insulated the front door.205042050520506

Well made a bunch more progress. Welded the pan frame to the evaporator, even mocked up my pan for the first time. I enjoy building them but enjoy boiling even more.
