Just curious how anyone made out last week with the colder temps than the week before if you kept your taps in?
Anyone pull taps yet? I got a few buckets over the weekend but thinking of pulling my taps this week. I missed a good first week by not tapping before school vacation in February due to other things...
Just wondering what others are thinking, pull taps this week or see what happens next week with the weather? I am hopeful for more favorable weather but feel like it could be over already.
I was thinking the same thing about Monday, hoping for a large amount but only had a small amount in each of my seven buckets in Billerica, but my three taps in Wakefield had just about three full...
I decided to hold off as I was not ready as well.... hoping to tap this week after the storm. Hope everyone that did tap had success.
Hi all, just wanted to ask around to see if anyone else was thinking of tapping this weekend in the Middlesex area? I'm about 80/20 on tapping or waiting another week or so.
After some trial and error last night, it seems like leaving the door open about an inch or two is best to force some air in and not allow enough cool air in to cool the pan or fire. I added another...
Thanks for your responses. The door had two handles to open and close as vents that allowed air into the box. Both handles are gone now (seized and broke off) and there are two vents on the door...
Hi All, I have learned a lot from browsing this site the past 5 years or so and enjoy making my own syrup for fun. My setup is an old wood stove that someone added to the back of to hold a 18"x32"...
I was thinking the same thing if the forecast stays as is. Good luck!
Well.... it seems like leaving the taps in for this weeks cold weather was a bust. Not much flow to speak of thus far so pulling taps this week to end a decent season. Good luck to all that are still...
I decided not to pull any taps and see how it goes. Nothing much going on this week thus far to nobody's surprise. Looking into next weeks forecast there might be some temps below freeing at night...
I am in similar situation myself. Coaching hockey and trying to manage other things only leaves so much time. Boiling for three or four weeknights in a row takes a toll. I am a teacher as well so...
With the recent warm temps this week I am wondering if I should pull my taps today and call it a season. I only make about 4-5 gallons of syrup on 10 trees as a fun hobby.
I was wondering what...
Looking good! I'm into my second week and have boiled 15 gallons twice thus far. We only have 9 taps in Billerica.
This is only my second year but I have been using three gallon frosting buckets from Market Basket bakery with 5/15" tubing down into the lids with a 5/16" hole which is a nice tight squeeze to keep...
Glad to hear. I'm in Billerica and tapped a few trees close to home but have about ten more in Woburn that I am waiting for later in the month.
