My first attempt at candy has failed. I am guessing I didn't stir it long enough, it is not set up kinda sticky and wet. Other issues might be, I didn't check the boiling point of water before...
I sure hope you're right, I only got 75 gallons from 160 taps today and the forecast is too much warm and no cold. Hope I'm wrong but this sure is starting to look just like last year.
I am going to wait, I keep looking at the weather and it looks like we may get some cold starting on the 13th or 14th. I hope it's enough to reset a season. I wish you
good luck, hopefully better...
Thanks for the replies, I will see what January does, the rest of this year has daytime highs in the 40s. If the trend doesn't change I will tap after the new year, this is like last year and Feb....
I tap 120-130 on bags. If they heal up or we get the cold snap and need to start over I will just make a new tap hole.
I have read this is ok to do since I only tap 1 per tree and they are large...
Missed out on a lot last season by thinking it would get cold like winter should be, folks that tapped in Jan. had a decent season.
I am thinking about putting in 30 or so taps to see how it flows....
Good to know.

I am in the same boat with new unopened membranes, so I too am interested in the answer.

This year I picked up a few trees from a neighbor down the road. When I ask him he said sure, some had been tapped before he bought the place and the taps are still in the trees! I thought there...
Thanks for the replies, its 15 gallons of syrup, don't want to base it on #of taps because this year we were only getting 30 to 40 gallons every couple days on 120
taps. Based on past years it...
What is customary? This was a poor year for us and we made 17 gallons. Tapped a new place this year and looking forward to long term with this neighbor. Probably got 15 gallons from his trees, so...
Well this season keeps dragging on. After 5 days of warm nights we started getting better temperatures, still not much sap, I think it's just too dry.
But I take what I can get. Made 17 gallons of...
There is a small business about 15 miles from me that cans fruit, berries, and makes jamms jelly and preserves. They buy all the fruit and berries and some of it comes in 4 gallon square buckets. I...
My area is no better, poor flow all season- 30 to 40 gallons of sap on 150 taps is depressing. Today is the fifth or sixth day with no night freeze and yesterday was
68 degrees. Tonight is forecast...
I am hobby also, I use a murphy cup with my hydrometer so I am sure I have syrup. Then I filter it into a 20qt. stainless pot using flat filters in a collander.
The stock pot is slightly floating...
I don't know what agitation cycle is
little tapper, is this 4 years on the same membranes and how much sap have you processed with them and how much can you run before you have to flush them? On a good day (not this year) I might get...
Ordered them through the ro bucket ZYIA, the concentrate one has a flow valve so you don't use the current needle valve.
You should at least use two pint jars and fill them at the same time with...
I put mine on a board this year, much better than in a bucket. This is my second year doing this and I am running the same membranes as last year, they are doing fine.
I have only done it 3 times...
Not familiar with your RO and I am just a small hobby producer. But I have a RO bucket that runs 18-20 gallons an hour and I run it overnight feeding the concentrate
back into the raw sap, if I...
I finished all I had in the pan, 14 gallons of syrup for the year. Some of the trees are getting the red flowers on them and with 60 degrees and rain today, and 67
for tomorrow I'm afraid they all...
I was worried in January that we might be missing it
I am tapping a different woods this year, The one I tapped in the past has sold and new owner said no. So I have other options, but with 150 taps out
the most I get is 90 gallons. Tapped Feb. 5th,...
Is that also true if I use check valve taps?
