I used some to make sugared almonds and they turned out fine.
I also use a heat tape while running. But at night I drain mine into an underground tank and leave my valve open. Never had a problem doing this.

Take the bucket out to your garden. Fill it with dirt and leave it for 2 weeks. Then empty and clean the bucket, the smell will be gone.

If they have an open top, Fill them with good garden dirt. Leave it for 2 weeks. Then wash them out. All the oder will be gone. I do this with dill pickle buckets. Works every time.
