Seemed very short - I agree. For the most part the sap never ran clear and once it warmed up the insects have become terrible! 100% of our taps are bone dry.
40+ taps went dry this week. Burned the last of my supply last night.
Not worth the struggle at this point. Anyone else packing it in?
SAP is gushing... not sure when to stop this whole thing...!
About 90 of our approx. 40 taps are in.. Trees are gushing...
Question, what type of bird are the ones that poke the holes on the trunks of trees?

Hi there, I'm a backyarder in Southwestern CT.
My Daughter has an upcoming school science fair and I thought 'what a great opportunity to do something on maple syrup!'
One caveat, the rules...
It was a good year -
Pulled our taps yesterday, SAP in buckets was turning yellow - and the syrup being produced was almost black! (but very tasty)
I've seen many references to 'roadside' trees.

The fire absolutely raged and my boil/evap increased...

So if there is a block of ice in a bucket along with a liqued, is everyone saying that the ice is water only and the liqued is at least concentrate?
If I'm understanding this correctly this is...
Is it the cloudy slightly grainy stuff in the syrup I make?
In years past I generally ignore that cloudy stuff, but then again If there is an easy way to remove why not!
So - I'm not sure I...
Wasn't able to check my buckets yesterday... But I will collect tonight as I want to store whatever I have before tomorrows big rain.
All in all slower flow than I anticipated...
Hi, I have a 2x6 Grimm evaporator wood fired... About 30 years old... We are big time novices.
Anyway I have two pans. (both redone with lead free solder)
Pan 1: Two compartments. The larger...
All on buckets. Very very little sap seems to be running.
Question: We are noticing leaking around the base of some of the taps, between the bark and the Grimm tap. I was/am hoping that the...
