I filled the pan to 2" deep (measuring with a tape measure from the top of the flues). I marked the depth in my sight glass and that's where I run it.
Thanks for the reply! What do you use to clean the outside of the pan/stainless that will remove all this burnt sap/syrup that won't scratch the stainless?
Also, can you post a pic of your...
I actually ended up buying that brush shortly after posting. Had my maiden boil on the pan last night - boils great but threw sap EVERYWHERE...what a mess.
How often do you find yourself cleaning...
Hi all-
Bought a 2x4 Smoky Lake hybrid pan recently and am told to brush the flues before each use to maximize efficiency.
I have 8 drop flues measuring 5" deep, 30" long by .75" wide. There...
Does anyone know the specific name of the bacteria(s) that contaminate our spouts (those of us on gravity buckets) and work to close the tap hole? This bacteria is also the same bacteria that would...
I am also in WNY- I think it's done but looking ahead the temps are supposed to go down on 4/2 leading me to think a run on 4/3. Is it worth holding out for?
Trees def have slowed down
Thanks for the great info!
Looking again at the weather I think it's still a bit early for us on buckets as the weather has changed (shocker right?). Great info here though.
Thanks to all...
Thank you all for the replies. It's not my property/trees so I wanted to be certain. Next up I have to learn pattern tapping.
I will be tapping this Saturday!
Getting ready to tap and took a look at some of my trees from last year. I noticed that some trees has healed quite nicely while others still have a very noticeable tap hole. The trees all range in...
Anyone else on gravity thinking of tapping early given the weather? I can't tell if I should tap now (for fear of season ending early ) or wait it out til end Feb/March.
Of the 14 acres there were about 20 hard maples found. Mostly basswood and elm. Upon further review of the house and property we decided to let it go.
I agree and I have an aborist coming Saturday to assist with this. I can tell you that 95% of the trees out there are oak - so many oaks lol. But there are also alot of silver maples (not exactly...
This is fantastic news
All the leaves are from different trees. I thought sugar leafs were flat along the bottom versus #1 & 3 have the bottoms turning in towards the stem. I appreciate any reassurance:)
Hi all-
Looking at purchasing some property and found some maples on it but I don't believe they are sugar maples, rather Norway. I would love to be wrong just this once but I figured I'd ask the...
What does everyone use? I have a 2x4 flat pan evap and the bottom of my pan is pretty bad. Have always used Barkeepers friend and a scrubbie but I am failing miserabl
Do you have any vids of your oil fired Smoky Lake evap? I would really love to see it!
Where abouts in Rochester are ya?
I was SHOCKED to find all my buckets and lines exactly where I left...
How did everyone fare with the wind?
Heading to the woods tonight after work to see what debacle awaits
I am looking to buy - to bad you are 5 hrs away
Thanks for the reply! Seems that i might have jumped a little early - what SAFE recourse do I have?
Jim
I tapped on 2/3 - all drop lines and buckets. Collected about 55 gallons total. 7 of which to fill the evap. I am newer to the hobby and have seen talk of tapping to early?
Roughly 50 taps
Gonna check after work at 5. I wouldn't plan on anything fantastical but fingers crossed
Had the draft door all the way open last night and we had a pretty hard boil. Please see [ATTACH=CONFIG]17861[/ATTACH
Boiled about 25 gal tonight. When I was down to the last 10 I was sooo close to syrup but I had to begin shutting doen. If I would have had another 5 or 10 gallons I would have drawn off. Oh well...
