This week does look good for sap. We have been thinking about beginning the process here in Merrimack, but may hold off. I usually tap the last week in February - all buckets, so I am hesitant to...
Time will tell. It looks like a good week ahead - a bit too warm Thurs/Fri, but nighttime temps look favorable for sap. The week after still looks good. I am still hoping for a few weeks of...
Something to think about.... Long range temps are looking favorable, we are definitely thinking about putting out taps for our little backyard operation this weekend.
I am in southern NH and some of my trees were running like crazy yesterday. Looking ahead at next week's weather, some nights will be close to freezing and it might just be enough to get one more...
I am boiling on a block arch with 3 steam pans and added RO (ROBucket) to my set up this spring. It was worth every penny! It has cut my boil time immensely and I am glad for it. I only put out 17...
We do 25 - 30 taps here, all on buckets. When we find ice in the buckets, we pitch that and keep the sap. I, too have melted that ice to 'see what it reads at' and have confirmed for myself it...
That looks awesome DairyVet! I have been boiling on a similar design for quite a few years now and it works well. This is a fun family activity and I am pleased to hear that your kids enjoyed your...
Sounds like you had a perfect day! Just think... this is just the beginning of the season. May you have many happy family boiling sessions this season! :)
Be patient. My trees that are in the sun are running a bit today, but ran better yesterday. The trees that get only partial sun, are dry are dripping very slowly. This time of year, they are still...
Thank you for sharing this insight into the past with us! Does the journal continue with sugaring further into March? It looks as though the family collected and boiled for one week and boiled to...
Beginning to get equipment ready to tap this week. I plan to tap Tues/Wednesday and hopefully get a little sap. The weather is looking favorable in southern NH later this week and next.
That is an awesome find! I have been using a 30 cup coffee urn for the last few years and they do make a difference! Have a good season!
I boil on a block arch with steam table pans. My back pan closest to the stack always boils the hardest. My front pan, nearest the door, seems to be the last to reach a fast boil - probably because...
Looking at the long-range forecast, next weekend looks like the start of perfect temps! I plan to tap and set out buckets next Saturday, February 22nd.
The long range forecast for next week looks good - but not much further beyond that, unless the weather changes. Should be good boiling weather too!
I too have used mason jars -- in various sizes -- for years. They are easy to use and look pretty on the shelf when filled. Never any problems with them!
That syrup looks beautiful! What was your filter process?
A friend of mine gave me a full bag of pellets. I plan to create some type of burn pot and experiment with them later this week.
That is going to taste soooo good on pancakes!
I too was wondering if they would burn hot enough to keep my pans boiling.... I suppose if it was a good source of fuel, a lot more people would be using it?
I am a bit low on my usual source of...
We need a few really cold nights to get things started again. Hang in there -- March can bring some big storms and very cold temps.
I tapped very early this year and have been watching my trees...
Yes. I meant pellets -- like the type used in a pellet stove. I have seen inserts for a fireplace and standard woodstove, but wondered if anyone had tried that with a block arch. My arch is...
I didn't accumulate as much firewood last spring as usual. I was wondering if anyone out there burns wood pellets in a block arch?
I set out 16 buckets on Monday. As of this morning, I have collected 30 gallons and it is still running, but slowing down. I am hoping that by the weekend I will do a small boil. I don't usually...
