Favorite for me is just being in the woods tapping, collecting or just maintaining trails.
Least favorite is boiling when it's in the 70°s and you can't wait because there's no snow to pile around...
Great sugar house. Nice job.
Tapped 10 days ago. Glad to have a cold spell so I can catch up with the filtering/canning.
Crazy weather, so I tapped crazy early but so far so good.
Looks good after this quick cold snap.
I wonder how much the Garlic Mustard invasive weed plays into this.
"Garlic mustard (Alliaria petiolata) has long been known to degrade mycorrhizal mutualisms in soils it invades and may also...
I don't even try to filter without decanting. Even letting it sit overnight and then filtering all but the dregs at the bottom is so much easier.
Yesterday was my last boil. Today I'll pull taps.
Glad I started early. If I were going to try a stretch the season I would have to tap additional trees since the current taps wouldn't last 10...
I reheat the poured off syrup, filter and can it at around 185°F.
The filtering of the decanted syrup goes quick but still captures a little niter.
I don't discard the niter after the first...
I don't know if it's right or wrong but I decant finished syrup. Pour most of it off the sediment to filter and can a couple days later.
I save the sediment and pour off more syrup as it...
Well the bad news is it's so cold the sap ain't running.
The good news is it's so cold the sweet in the pan is frozen.
Looks like it's going to be hot this week, so I'll be boiling in hot weather...
I'm getting some of these Whiskey Barrel Chips to try in some home-brew and syrup.
Anyone here tried this for a bourbon barrel syrup?
From what reading I've done on the Garlic Mustard it such a strong competitor that it severely reduces the diversity of the undergrowth.
I get good sap from the trees but I think for general...
So I’ve been spending more time in the woodlot lately and it seems like if it isn’t one invasive weed it’s another. The garlic mustard covers just about the entire forest floor.
I read that garlic...
It has been a rediculously warm maple season. Most of my taps are healing up and (of course not flowing) no thanks to these prolonged warm spells.
Boiling sap in shorts and t-shirt weather just...
In the fall I open the cupola and hang dry beans and herbs in the shack to dry.
I go with buckets and drop lines. I drill a hole for the tubing just below the top edge of the bucket.
Seems holes in the top eventually leak and though it doesn't amount to much water, it usually...
Thanks Johnny Yooper, I considered vertical logs also.
Your vertical log sugar house looks great.
Thanks Dlee,
Definitely nice to have a comfortable shack.
Congratulations!
Even with our small shacks, it seems luxurious to boil in such comfort.
The inside floor space for my shack is 10x10 and it works fine with my 2x4 pan.
Being small helped minimize how the building codes and zoning effected the cost.
Nice work! I think you'll have ready.
I came across a bunch of cedar in the wood I had put up for last year's boil. I decided I like using it.
Burns a little quicker and so I had to adjust stoking time.
It doesn't leave as much...
Great looking sugar house.
I'm wondering what Dr. Tim's answer is.
and
Is too deep (within reason of course) somehow detrimental to production or the tree?
Very good news!!!
