Anyone else tapping? Its still a bit early for my in Central IL. I usually dont tap till Mid February
Thanks Dr. Perkins. That is quite interesting and I had not thought about it that way. I usually just do the average of 10-12 samples throughout the season, taken at the collection tank before...
So many Favorites - That first big sap flow after you tap
Least favorite - End of season cleanup
Fun exercise. Gallons of sap per gallons of syrup is not a great stat by itself as it needs Sugar % of sap collected to give context. I added a few more items below.
Number of taps:210
Vacuum...
Every year I keep daily detailed kitchen notes on items such as how much sap collected, sugar percent, how much wood used, how much syrup made and how much water removed with the RO. And every year...
Unfortunately pitch it. Scorched syrup mixed with good syrup will ruin the good syrup.
Pulled taps yesterday and final boil on evap today. Still need to finish pan sweet on the stove. 121 gallons on 210 taps. A great syrup season!
Looks good. After you get more comfortable, continue to lower the pan level in the flue pan. You will get the best boil rate with 1/2 inch sap over the flues. Some have even less but that makes me...
Hey all,
Here is the thread for the home made AOF manifold I did for my 2x6 raised flue evap. It has held up incredibly well over the years and my welding skills are mediocre at best. It is all...
Anyone still tapped? We tapped 210 on Feb 13th and have had some incredibly large flows this season (best was 800 gallons in 24 hours on the first week of tapping). We are still making syrup although...
I would go with a maple dealer for your DE. Then you are sure you are getting the right stuff for filtering maple syrup.
Yes I am using both Pre and final filters. I have tried using DE/filter aid. With DE/filter aid it does make the syrup clearer and remove the fine niter particles but it slows the filtering down...
Hey all,
I use a home made vacuum filter with 2 pots, one on top of the other. It works great with filtering syrup in a low amount of time. I am having a little problem with a little niter getting...
Thanks for the feedback on your experience. Last year I did not use DE with my homemade vacuum filter and it worked great besides passing very fine niter late in the season. I will be using DE this...
That is good info. Thanks.
For my 12" I use a 5hp wall mount unit that I put in the attic of the sugar kitchen to keep the noise down. Got it from one of the big box stores.
Thanks for the tip. So more DE = better filtering? With a vacuum filter, is there such thing as too much DE?
Hey all,
I am using a home made vac filter with good success. I pre-filter syrup coming off the evaporator, then send it through the vacuum filter with one pre and one final as filter medium....
Hey all,
I started up the RO yesterday in anticipation of sugaring soon. I did the normal rinse, wash, rinse. At the end of the cycle I happened to see the permeate tank had some coloration on the...
I have been taking syrup off the evap through a couple pre filters to catch most of the niter before running it through the vac filter. This has helped a lot.
I use similar temp settings at 34 on and 28 off. I also use the 4048 on 140 taps. This setup is inside an unheated sap shack and I have never had a problem with freezing creating problems. I have 110...
I use both the 4008 and 4048. I started with12 volt 10 amp power source for the 4048 and it did not like it, it had startup issues. I went up to a 12 volt 20 amp power source and the 4048 performed...
We had a good but short season. Collected record gallons of sap but the sugar content was lowest I have had since I have been keeping track (since 2019). Tapped 215 the first week of March. Pulled...
Thanks Dave and Tim for the info on aluminum. I will avoid this option.
