I'm pretty firm on a "local" manufacturer, but perhaps I should explore all possibilities.
Other quotes have come in from CDL, Atkinsons (who is a distributor for CDL), LaPierre, an independent...
Thanks Big Eddy. I can see your point. The larger outlets are only fine if they are low enough.
I just spoke with someone who warned against getting pans with very large drop boxes as too much...
OK...so here is what Thor says about valves lower than the pan on a small 18 X 60 rig...
"The Transfer pipe is 1 1/5 inch dia. Is sufficient for small evaporator".
If folks have an informed...
Yep. I know. I don't usually let anyone in my kitchen when I'm cooking:) If I had my way, I'd be running my syrup rig and not friends and family. However, I have some health challenges that may not...
"if you know what you are doing" - I figure I am attentive enough to draw at the right time and ensure the levels are correct etc, etc ......but the real question is.....are other people. I am trying...
Thanks MF - Thor is the lower quote. The quote they gave me did not include the lower valves sections. I'll contact them and see what the additional $ looks like and if they actually do that for a...
The more expensive pans have:
1. ss boxes around fittings to allow better flow
2. one more flue
3. probably better quality welds - but not too sure. It looks better:)
I know, I really just...
OK - I'm sitting on the fence.
If you were faced with the decision about whether to spend the extra bucks (around 30%) on a pan with a better flow circulation(the ss boxes around the fittings)...
Speaking from no experience......but I guess if you really wanted to simulate a smokey taste.....you could try to put a pot(or warming tray) of sap on the BBQ with the cover closed. Take some soaked...
Here's another one....

I live in Ottawa, but my "play property" is near Shawville, Qc.
Thanks Hobbiest for the tip re the new hwy and for sharing your thoughts on Thor.
Thanks MM. I guess that makes sense. For a small hobby producer like myself, I'm not sure if it is worth, or if I can justify, an additional 30% in value of the pans for this feature (I should note...
Just an update on this link and for anyone looking for a steam pan/tray for a propane burner. I contacted Thor and they have quoted $110 for a custom 16 X 16 X 4". This seems to me to be an extremely...
I'm on the verge of buying a new pan set and there is one major difference between the two suppliers that I would like to understand...
I don't understand what the box that surrounds the fittings...
Thanks Grimm. I'm going to go check out the shop in person in the next couple of weeks and so I'll have a close look at the welded T's and elbows. As you say, it's probably minor, but worth knowing...
I'm pretty close to ordering a new set of pans from Thor. They have the best price - by far, and I have read some older threads where folks are happy with their welds and service.
Just to be...
That's very useful info - especially re the 3/4 feeder.
Given that I'm probably going to have a pan set made, do you think a second hot float box be useful - or not really needed if the pipe was...
Thanks Big Eddy. That's a pretty decent gph. Do you have a syrup pan as well? If so, do you keep everything running at the same depth?
Also - how far are your flues from the ramp?
THanks a lot.
Also wondering what the main differences are between a drop flue vs a raised flue are. Which is more efficient? Easier to clean? Easier to drain? etc etc.
Thanks.
Can anyone out there give me a rough idea what kind of gph I might expect to get from a drop flue pan set for my 18 X 60 arch? Some long days this yr have me believing that I ought to look into an...
I agree with Terry. You can use brick, as mentioned and then take up more space with sand if needed. "they say" that you want the flames to "lick" the bottom of your pan - even at the back. I think...
Hello all.
Now that the buckets are clean, I wanted to send out a quick note of thanks to everyone for sharing ideas and helping small hobby producers like myself.
I made several improvements...
