Marc, the set up looks great. You've really expanded since I've been up there. I took two years off and back at it this year. I got side tracked and scorched my syrup pan today... grrr. I had...
BSD, have you tapped yet and how much sap do you have? I have a small folded ss flat pan that you can use - you can boil 3-4 gallons at a time. I'm about to tap today and can also take the sap off...
That last post was in response to Starting Small's question, thought it would connect to the quote.
Oh, not more than 10-15 gallons, i've spilled more sap in prior years than i've collected this year. I can't remember the horsepower of this little vac pump but it's the same one i've used for...
OK, reading these threads, at least I have company. I tapped everything last week and I'm getting very little in the way of sap flow. Having a hard time w/my vac pump which contributes but I just...
Thanks Hodorskib, I actually built it a few years ago, just can't seem to update my profile/signature :)
Yeah Mark, sap is still flowing but buds popped on most of my reds so I'm done. First time I finished boiling and pulled all my taps on the same weekend. Just finished, only made about 10 gallons...
Boiling on Saturday, pulling the taps on Sunday! Short season but fast and furious last ~3 weeks
It started late for me, didn't get taps in for those few weekends in Feb but lately it has been flowing well. I only have 75 taps in this year but they're all on vac so I'm getting enough to have...
Alcontrast, I too started w/steam table pans, in fact I still have them. Not sure where you are in central CT but if you want these just make me a reasonable offer and they're yours. I think there...
Like the way you're thinking Mark!
Started tapping last weekend, finished yesterday, finally boiled tonight, sweetened the pans. After taking last year off, nice to get back in the groove.
I have ~30 buckets/lids/taps I can part with, located in Newtown, PM me if interested. Buckets are aluminum, lids are galvanized and taps are stainless
I'm done too. The content of my little hobby vac tank was a sad shade of yellow :( This year wasn't too good compared to last but still had fun. Time for the garden. And the bees.
It's 100% check valves for me next year... Mark, I'm 50/50 reds and have been tapped about the same number of weeks but mine are down to a trickle. I boiled last night but don't have enough...
Very little sap, boiling forever (seems like) and lots of niter... grrr
Not too great here in NW CT either. I was thinking my 3 year old drops were doing me in but the buckets are not much better. I still haven't finished any syrup and have been tapped for 8 days. ...
Mark, thanks again for the offer of help, I'll be styling when the clamp setup comes in... so my temp solution looks like Jed Clampett put it together but's holding water, er, sap. Just got done...
Hey guys,
Any ideas on how to connect a bulk milk tank to any type of pvc fitting? I thought about a fernco rubber fitting but they say drain/waste fitting so thinking that will not be food...
OK, after much debate (mostly with myself), I tapped today. 25" of vac - little leak somewhere but it's getting dark and I'm pooped. I thought I fixed all of the storm damage to the lines but I...
Definitely go with the four stroke, no mixing and you won't have to deal with the two stroke fumes
I have that same Honda pump, new last year. Worked like a champ for me, have a look around ebay just in case you can find one that is new-in-box
OK, thx, I'll try the vinegar today. Yeah, Mark, I found a 300 gallon tank over in Hebron couple weeks back, pretty psyched. I know you were looking for zero tanks but if you want some bulk storage...
Anyone have suggestions for cleaning out a transfer pump? I have a power mate pump operated by a honda gx4 four-stroke engine. Can I run bleach or vinegar through it or should I just get in there...
Hey guys,
I looked around the 'business side of things' thread for retail pricing info but wanted to poll the CT sugarmakers. We are going to to sell retail for the very first time and am trying...
