Tapped on Feb 18th this season which was really early. We will see how the season fairs. I am on the other end of town from bigschuss so it will be interesting to see the difference on sap flow.

I have had one for 7 years now and like it. Works great and was very easy to use. I would recommend it to anyone.
I usually just clean my pans at the end of the season. This year however I have cleaned twice already. There is a lot of niter build up this season where I am. Some of my sap had sat for a few days...
We are doing fine in the hill town of western Massachusetts. The people scared buying items is intense but we have made some great syrup so far this season. This will run its course but we wish all...
One of our fellow sugar makers in western Massachusetts had a fire last night. Nobody was hurt but still is a shame. See link...
Welcome to the site. Everyone here is very knowledgeable when it comes to the various parts of sugaring. We are all here to help. I too started with cinder block arch outside and it was fun. Now I...
That is a slick set up. I like the way you piped everything. I have a wagon I use in the summer to haul a water tote. I might have to make something similar for sap hauling.
Yes I agree buckts or bags would be the best for your set up. I still use buckets and this year we are putting more out.
That is a very nice rig. Looks like it will really boil the sap. Enjoy.
I just took delivery of this yesterday. it needs some work but the price was good. I will be pulling trees out of the sugarbush for firewood and some saw logs. 19137
We have experienced a good year this year too. We are up to 14.5 gallons so far this year. I am at 2150 feet elevation and I think I will get this week and then that will be it. My sugar content was...
Sounds like you have a great start. All of the options you listed are nice. Small wood fired evaporators are out there second hand or if you can new is always an option. I have the wood from my...
I purchased the plans for a 12 x 16 sugarhouse and sourced the lumber from a local sawmill. At the time the precut kits were a little expensive. Myself and one other guy assembled the house in a few...
Looks great. My first rig was on cement blocks. Now I have upgraded to a sugarhouse and an evaporator. You should have a lot of fun making syrup.
I agree this is music to a sugar maker's ears. I still use buckets because I like the old school look. Maybe someday I will put up some tubing but we will see.
Welcome to the club. As everyone else has said most of us started the same way you are. Good luck and we are all here for you.
We made 5.17 gallons of total syrup this year. Just a little over a gallon of golden and the rest amber. We did not have a good start but it seamed to catch up at the end, only a little too late. We...
Welcome to the family. I too am kind of a newbie. I have only been making syrup for four years so far. This year we made just over 5 gallons from 21 trees. We would of had more but didn't have time...
Anyone going to the open house at Bascom's Maple Farm on May 1st or May 2nd? My wife and I are going up Saturday the 2nd to pick up next years supplies and talk about the season with fellow sugar...
Good work by the firefighters. Great they are back up and running. That sugar house is about 30 minutes from my home.
The past two days it has been 18/19 at night and 36 degrees during the day here in Savoy MA. at 2150' elevation. The sap is starting to run ok. Today it should run good. It was 20 degrees this...
We tapped 3/8/15 and 3/14/15. Has been really slow so far. What syrup we made so far has been nice.
When you count how many more trees you can tap next season while lugging two full 5 gallon buckets of sap to your gathering tank. When your wife is saying can't we finish filtering in the morning and...
I agree that bigger is not always better. The 5075e or 5056e are both good tractors and could handle just about anything you would like to do with it. I do suggest ice chains on the rear tires if you...
Noel,
That is one impressive sugar house. We are still boiling outside with 21 taps this year. Someday we hope to have a sugar house that nice. I also feel your pain with not level ground. Great...
