So it's been a slow start to the season and I've only probably ran 250 gallons of sap through my mainline (300 taps)to clean it out before collecting it. The problem is that I smell an off smell in...

Not a good year. Missed the early warm up, and only made 24 gallons on 285 taps on 3/16 gravity. Made 78 gals. Last year, would've went over 100 if my buddy didn't melt down my pans.

Not doing well here either 325 gallons so far, and forecast doesn't look good.

I thought you were saying the float and the connection to the front pan were on same side of evaporator. I get what you're saying and that is how I'm running mine. Hope to have it done tomorrow.
