Looking for some feedback. In the market for a new RO. Using a Deer Run 500 for the past 6 years. My sap averages 1.4/1.5. Rarely if ever see 2. I two pass now and boil 12/13%. I would like to get...
I bought it as an electric model. I always use 650-700 gallons of sap as a minimum to run the RO. That will give you pretty close to the 500 gallons of permeate that is suggested. I also do the hot...
I have a Deer Run 500 electric. I have 850 3/16 taps at my cabin 3 hours away. I am not there everyday so its common to have 1500 gallons of sap to process when I arrive. I rarely see 2.0% sap....
This is my second year with a steamaway on a 4' flue pan. I cannot get my temperature up above 175. I think it's related to how full I make it. I've tinkered with levels but never really found a...
We are in Northeast Pa. in Sullivan County. Sap is slightly cloudy but very good yet. Sugar is at 1.4. It has been low all year though. Making very good tasting dark right now. Tapping all hard...
We quit. Had a pretty good run after Friday's good freeze(22 degrees). Sugar dropped to 1.1%. Made about 18 gallons of dark and could hardly get it through the press. Changed RO filters several...
I have a Leader 2x6. I can boil off roughly 50 gallons per hour. I currently have a 3/4" line feeding the evaporater. It is plenty of feed for the rig. I have ordered a steamaway for next year. Any...
I used an angle grinder and ground the jaws down. Only took a couple minutes. Now it will work for both 3/16 and 5/16.
I already have an RO and a bigger evaporator is not a possibility. I am just trying to decide if the added cost of a steamaway is worth it over a hood and preheater.
Looking to get a steam hood and preheater for my 2x4 flue pan. Is it worth jumping all the way in and getting a steamaway? The charts say it will give me another 20 gph. That would definitely be...
The problem is the pump. I took the belt off and the motor spun fine. I'm hoping it is a clog (maybe hardened sugar) in it. Right now I can't even spin it by hand so I don't know how to flush it with...
Dave,
Do you have a preheater in the flue pan hood? If so, who made it and are you happy with it?
Going to buy a flue pan steam hood and preheater for my Leader 2x6 for next season. Any advice on going with a Leader made or maybe one of the smaller shops. Definite difference in price. Is there...
Got a new full bank 7" Wes Fab this year. Worked great all season until near the end. When I would turn it on, the motor would just hum and eventually trip the breaker. I would manually turn the...
Where do you purchase the food grade sodium hydroxide?
Log cabin luke,
If you do find any leaks, what are the causes? Are they animal damage, bad connections to fittings, loose spiles, etc.?
For all those that use hydrogen peroxide to wash their tubing, where do you get it in bulk. Say at least 1 gallon containers. I feel a little silly buying all the quarts and pints out of the local...
We usually drill frozen trees. There is a definite sound difference when the tap is seated correctly. I believe splitting is easier in frozen wood. It does make a nice clean round hole.
Brandon,
I too bought a new 500 model from Ray for this year. I'm in northern Pa., so haven't had any sap to try it out on yet. How did you run your sap thru? Did you keep recirculating and pulling...
How are you attaching the spout? Short piece of 5/16?
Had the same problem with my Leader 2x6. Bought an insulated air tight arch front with a woodsaver blower. No more door warping or cracking problems and a noticeable improvement in boiling rate.
Is there any benefit to using the check valve spout in a gravity system?
I have used Leader Memory flex and D&G 3/16 and 5/16. I much prefer the D&G.
Just finished my 3/16 trial run for this year. Switched 325 taps from 5/16 to 3/16. I did not want to hook vacuum gauges to the top of the laterals, so my question is: Does anybody have any advice on...
