The trees give you what trees give you !
Bascom's maple
Favorite : Put me down as another of tapping and being in the woods.
Least Favorite: washing all the buckets at seasons end.
I would suggest looking into something from Bill Mason , in my opinion his arches are much better than leaders.
Another ditto on Bill Mason, I just have the regular 2x3 and it works with my 50 taps.
I would also recommend you get the arch paper he offers, I got it and you can almost put your hands on the side of the arch. I put an old living room chair in my shack my wife loves it. Doesn't...
I replaced my 15 year old leader 1/2 pint with a Mason 2x3 this year. A big improvement boils a lot faster. He's a great guy to do business with, it was ready when he said it would be. with a hundred...
Oops I apologize. I only have 50 trees on buckets and have to trudge thru the snow to collect. if i can do it when I'm 74 I" be happy.
Reading that you are 75 , gives me encouragement that I have at least 9 more years of sugaring.
I do small amounts also , I just let it sit in the fridge for a week and decant out slowly most of the sludge sticks to the bottom of the pan.
Sorry for your loss. I know how you feel we just had to put our 14 year old Border Collie down 4 days ago.
I only got 20 or so off my taps the way it was running early yesterday I expected more. Not looking like a banner year for me.
I got 50 gallons today. will be boiling tomorrow.
Got 30 gal. from my 50 taps yesterday . Going to fire up the evaporator in a little while.
Just finished tapping 50 taps. Some were dripping already with any luck hope to be able to boil Tuesday.
Tapped the trees around the house after work today. Hope to tap the woods trees tomorrow after work.
Going to put my 50 taps in Tuesday it's the latest I have ever tapped. Did propane for a few years now I have a small sugar shack and a 1/2 pint evaporator.
I haven't tapped yet I'm in southwestern N.H.
Buy the wife a new stove .
I have a leader 1/2 pint you will have to run close to 100 gals .of sap through before you can draw off syrup. Any thing less and I have to finish on my turkey fryer.
I used cement board under the evap. and a piece of steel I had in front of the door no issues.
I'm a small hobbyist also. What I do is put it in the fridge for 4 or 5 days and let it settle and then decant it slowly so all the sludge stays on the bottom of the pan. then reheat and bottle. I...
I have a 1/2 pint and I have fired it up with as little as 20 gal. At 1 inch deep it holds about 4- 5 gallons of sap. My preheater holds another 4-5 gals of sap so you could probably boil with only...
I think it may not be useful on a half- pint . I have one and I have to boil off almost 100 gals. of sap to be able to draw off finished syrup.
I picked up a used leader 1/2 pint for 700 dollars look for something like that. You could sell it when you move and probably get most your money back. The one I bought came with firebrick and stack.
