For those of us still using barrel stoves, how long will they usually last before having to replace them. I'm guessing most of us on barrels average between 2 and 8 gallons per season.
Thanks
All good information.
Thanks!
How long of a soak? Couple hours, couple days, couple weeks?
Thanks
Excellent idea!! Once I switched to the thick felt like cone filter, I had the clearest syrup I've ever had with zero niter in the glass bottles. For the little bit lost in the filter, it's worth it...
I use these shut offs to be able to stop the lines from running while I'm working with the RO switching barrels and to keep the system full between uses. I will be using them to store the full...
This is what my directions say from Carl.
Instructions for End of Season Storage
For end of season storage, flush according to Instructions for Cleaning” section 5, step 2.After you have...
Seems like most are storing their membranes in preservative. Why would my directions say to store it at years end in water? Now I'm questioning it?
+1 on the Smokey Lake Gold Series Hydrometer and Murphy Cup
I have the same question. Seems like people store their membranes differently. Some in preservative and some in water.
The end of season storage instructions for my set up says to flush with...
Wish I was closer to Cheshire! I would gladly make use of that!
My plan was to collect my last batch on Saturday, boil on Sunday and take everything down today. I actually had my best sap run of the season between Saturday night and this morning. Most buckets...
I had very good luck with the thick felt cone filter, along with the pre filter. I'm getting zero niter now in my glass bottles. But I also run it through the filters instantly, once the hydrometer...
Also, I posted in the 'Bottling and Filtering and Bulk Storage of Your Syrup' thread regarding the problems I had with filtering. I've tried everything. I thought the same thing as you, regarding...
+1 on the hydrometer. The Gold Series hydrometer from Smokey Lake already has the line scored in the glass, so you know the paper hasn't moved just by looking at it.
Another good idea! Thanks treehugger!
Here are the instructions for flushing an "improperly" maintained RO Bucket.
Since you stored yours properly, I would think you can't go wrong following these. Maybe even eliminating some of the...
Good idea ecolbeck! I did the same on my cooler.
In da bush, I don't have to turn it on and off while it's running. Plus I only run 75 gallons or less through it. It's set up at my shop, so I'm...
One thing I'd like to have is a switch to turn it on and off. I know pool pumps don't have a switch either. Neither does my transfer pump to move sap out of barrels. Is there a reason why water pumps...

I bought the RO10 Couldn't be happier. Ran 68 gallons through it yesterday. I'll admit I was a little skeptical, thinking there must be sugar in that permeate barrel the first time I used it. I...
Thanks,
That's what I'm doing now. Example: This past weekend I had 64 gallons of raw sap and ran it through my little RO to 32 gallons. I boiled the 32 down to around 2 gallons and finished it on...
I'm just a backyarder, and still on a barrel stove and flat pan.
My flat pan is 20" X 30" X 6". Is that too small of an area to step up to a divided pan for next year?
Does a divided pan evaporate...
Here's my rig. I bought a barrel stove kit, but didn't use the exhaust port. I wanted more space up top, so I made mine exhaust out the back. I added a blower too. Mine is variable speed so I can...
This past weekend was my second boil. Small time barrel stove. Boiled 50 gallons. Color was good. Pretty much the same as my first boil.

Boiled this past weekend and had much better results. I have one of the thick felt like cone gravity filters I purchased last year with the four loops on it to hang it. I only boil between 30 and 50...
