My stovepipe seems to last 2 years max. Is there anything I can do to prolong the life?
I’m using black stovepipe. It’s kept indoors, but it still has rust spots on it and I find that after 2...
I’ve had a few runs, and done a few days of boiling. I’ve got about 4 gallons finished and looking at another 80 to 100 gallons of sap. I’m almost out of wood, so we’ll probably collect today and...
I plan to run the sap through the RO tomorrow and boil Sunday.
My little sap blanket fort is working out well. There’s a skim of ice on each barrel but they haven’t frozen solid. Hopefully it’ll...
Got 2 decent runs - about 40 gallons each time. Now the challenge is to keep the sap from freezing so I can run the RO before i boil.
Rigged up a light with some foam insulation to try and keep it...
I need to update my signature. I got the Starcat last year and was really pleased. The firebox is smaller than I expected, but it’s a nice little evaporator!
Tapped today - about 30 buckets.
The flow should stop soon… :)
I'm nowhere near ready, but I saw this article about sap flowing in VT: https://vtdigger.org/2023/01/02/warm-weather-causes-maple-sap-to-flow-temporarily/
I’m looking for a maple barbecue sauce recipe. I’ve looked around, but haven’t found anything that I really like. Any suggestions?
Went pretty well. I probably did too much on the first try (1/2 gallon of sap). Came up to temperature quicker than I thought it would and the change to sugar happened quickly in my kitchen aid.

Yup, single wall. I’ll hit it with some wire and paint it. Thanks!
What are you best practices for cleaning and maintaining your evaporator?
I have a new Starcat evaporator and it looks good after the first season. I’ll probably touch it up with some high...
Collected about 40 gallons yesterday as things were freezing up. The tractor almost didn’t make it up the hill.
The RO works well and I’m getting the hang of the new Starcat evaporator.
Hope...
Collected about 45 gallons from last night. Planning to transfer it and run it through the RO today. Will boil tomorrow morning.
I agree - add it to some vodka till you get a mixture you like. If you want less maple flavor, add it to whiskey, bourbon or something smokey.
I borrowed a heater from my neighbor who uses it to keep his cows water tank free of ice.
I got rid of all of the blocks of ice that I collected from buckets. I’d already chopped holes in them to...
Thanks Dave, the problem is it’s 100% ice!
I pulled my barrel out into the sun and collected the frozen buckets. I put that in another barrel in the sun. Hopefully it’ll melt a bit in the next day...
I’ve got a trailer full of wood, just waiting on some sap…

The past few years it seems I’ve been worrying about keeping sap cold till I can boil. This year I have the opposite problem. Everything is ice.
I have a barrel where I store the collected sap...
Thanks for the video. It’s great to see what others do, even if I’m running a really small rig.
Reminds me I need to fashion a holder for my filter.
Looking for advice on how to manage sap with my new RO (in a bucket).
I have a small StarCat evaporator and 35 taps on buckets.
Is it best to process sap overnight and then boil in the morning,...
My RO in a bucket should arrive in the next day or so. Glad to have the time to get acquainted with it and figure out the best way to set things up.
The tank I was using the past few years isn’t available and I’m looking at IBC totes.
Someone locally has them for $30 without the cage. How stable are they without the cage? Right now I’m using a...
The sap was flowing overnight. I collected 40ish gallons of sap today.
Thanks Poet
