has anyone ever heard of st croix evaporator? I'm going to look at a 2x6 drop flue...I can't seem to find any information on this manufacturer. Any information would be great. Thanks
Oops...
Unbelievable flow today in North Guilford; no buddy syrup to speak of yet.
Until today sap was running at 2-2.25. Today it dropped to 1.5-1.75. Anyone else notice a drop?
Jake: yes 66-67 brix at 60degress. I thought the question was refering to hot syrup. 59-60 brix at211 degrees f. sorry I should hve been more specific
66-67 Brix seems high for finished syrup. I never go higher than 59-60 Brix. You can always "fix" heavy syrup by adding sap. I would highly recommend buying a syrup hydrometer and test cup. Good...
Hi: This is my second year; I have generated a lot of interest among friends and neighbors who are interested in buying syrup. I'm not looking to get top dollar, but I wouldn't mind some extra cash...
I just found a hydrometer that reads from 0 to 30 brix. How/can I use this to measure percent of sugar content of sap? What I mean is how do I convert the Brix reading to percent sugar content?
My sugarbush consists of mostly Silver Maples. Does anyone know how they compare to other maple species in terms or sap flow, sugar content, and syrup flavor?
I have a 2x3 Leader Half-Pint. With good wood, a blower, and fully bricked arch, the most I get out of it is around 7 gph. I have around 50 taps and can keep up with it boiling about 5 to 7 hours a...
When I collected yesterday after heavy rain, I noticed some of the sap had a slight yellow color to it. I started boiling early this morning, and only two hours into it the sap looked unusually...
Just ordered a blower which I intend to use with my half-pint evaporator. Only cost $39.99, new on the internet. It is rated at 60cfm. Is that cfm rating suitable for this application? I intend...
Hi: This was my first year boiling on my half-pint evaporator. I am already planning on tapping additional trees for next year, so I'd like to increase my boiling efficiency/speed for next year...
ok...so I pretty much know I boiled some spoiled sap. It didn't look yellow or smell particularly bad during boil, but the near-finished syrup is really dark; it does taste very sweet though. What...
...so what happens if you boil bad sap?
Thank you sapbrush. I went ahead with the brick and mortar...It came out fine. The instructions on the web helped me get the jist of it however, those instructions are for the new-style square...
Hello...I'm new to this. I just purchased a used half-pint evaporator with the older-style arch (round bottom but not the 55 gal drum type). It does not have the fire brick installed and is missing...
