Go to the advanced search, and put in Maple nuts for beginners. You will have to go through about 6 pages. Look for a post by Dennis H.

The first time i used a hydrometer it my wife said that thing does not work, because of taste and thermometer. The next batch i waited a little longer, and put the hydrometer in and it was floating....

I do not recommend topping trees. With that being said i have tried to tap three different trees that have been topped. Has anyone else tried tapping topped trees. I have never had these trees...

If you can't tell the difference between reds and silvers and sugar maples are you sure you are tapping maples?
