Emptied out the woodshed last night so I'm going to call it a wrap for the season. Finished up at .21 gallons/tap. Doesn't sound that impressive, but this was a new production record for us. After...

Hit a new production high last night. Also cooked the flue pan...
Damage isn't too bad, caught it in time to prevent major carnage. Still not sure what happened. Either the float jammed or the the...
Still chugging away in SE Vermont. Woodshed is close to empty, but there should be just enough left for us to set a new production high today.
5/16th Canadian tapping bit and generally drilling while the trees are frozen. Spiles are tapped in until vibration ceases. Leaks are suspected when a continuous series of air bubbles are observed...
Hoping I might get some feedback on this.
We run a wood-fired 3x10 Leader MaxFlue with a preheater on an airtight arch with air-under-fire. When I'm alone in the sugar house I fire every 5...
This is our second season using the CV2. I have had to reseat a couple dozen out of 300, mostly in red maples. It also appears that if you reseat the spouts once, they tend to work themselves loose...
Still chugging away in SE Vermont. Gravity lines and buckets shut down on Sunday, but vacuum lines are still bringing in plenty of sap for a daily boil. Making darker syrup than we've ever made...
We run a 3x10 Leader maxflue with a preheater on an airtight arch. When alone in the sugar house I get it up to 100-125 gph with a stack temp between 900 - 1000. When I have trusted help it can be...
Temps topped out at 70 yesterday and by evening the buckets and gravity tubing had slowed considerably. Boiled mid-morning and again in the evening trying to get the sap processed as fresh as...
Not a bad start to the season. 1/3 of the way to our production goals and here it is just March 1. I've been lax in testing sugar content, but last night we were pulling off a gallon of syrup for...
Pulled in 700+ gallons of sap yesterday off the 500 or so tap in so far. First boil, first syrup of the season, and the first time we've ever made syrup on the first boil. Hoping to finish tapping...
Finished tapping the first bush yesterday in the rain. Moving down the road to the other lots today. Hope to have all tubing tapped by the weekend!
You folks are inspiring, but looks like I'm going to miss this early start. Just wasn't in the cards to be able to drop everything at the end of January to jump into sugaring.
I am going to start...
That's it for us. Sap is still running but just swept up the woodshed and threw the sweepings in the firebox. Burned every last wood scrap in sight. Our best season yet for total production.
Good...
I'm with you DoubleBrook. All tanks are full this morn. Had to empty one twice last night. Poised to set a new production high today if the wood holds out!
Thermometer has been stuck at 31 for the past 36 hours. Must be time to replace it?
I'll take your left over wood. I'm down to 1/2 cord and sap is still pouring in!
Only added vacuum to 250 taps, but that certainly is helping. We are nearing 0.2 gallons of syrup/tap. Average for...
No need to go too crazy filtering sap. Just need to get the bugs and any grit out. Save the fine filtering for the syrup.
I'd be more concerned about that garden hose you are using to transfer...
No freeze last night and gravity + buckets are tailing off. Vacuum still bringing in some. This could be it unless we see a freeze in the next night or two. We're close to 125% and closing in on a...
Moderate run of close to 1/2 gal per tap yesterday and we beat the forecast with another freeze last night. Should be another decent run today!
Had a chance to catch up on sleep last night. Gravity and buckets stopped running yesterday and had just 75 gallons from the sap puller. Temps this morning are disappointing. Hoping for a good hard...
Hit 80% of expected production last night and passed my 2014 production total. Gathered again this morning. Looks like gravity lines and buckets have stopped running. Vacuum lines are still flowing.
Record day yesterday. Brought in 800 gallons of sap. Add another zero and I could be Spud!
My draw off channel foams up all the time. Unless it is climbing over the pan dividers I don't worry about it. If it does get over the dividers I add defoamer right at the takeoff.
I do not believe that the DE will affect the density of the syrup or your hydrometer reading.
