So 12 years of making syrup and still learning.
I'm using the original ss taps I received Christmas 2008. They still look new, even though I've not cleaned them as described in this thread. Hot...
18 buckets yesterday, sap was running on all but 1.
I had a short season last year, it got warm during my second week and I pulled the taps because of the mold specks accumulated in the buckets. I...
Headline news this morning, another reason to Love Maple!
Meet coconut water's new rival: Maple tree water
Wander into a Whole Foods (WFM) and you might find a new type of drink: maple tree...

I'd personally find something to cover them... The droppings from the animal friends in the woods are a concern as well as the potential for rain filling your buckets and watering down your sap.
I put in 14 taps on buckets last Friday. Managed to get 11 gallons of sap in 3 days before the cold weather hit. 2 pints of almost syrup in the fridge! Good way to fix the Winter Inactivity Blues! ...
I had no idea that all the work we did this season, tapping, gathering, cutting wood, boiling, filtering, bottling and then clean up and we made 5-6 gallons of syrup. 3 weekends of admiring nature...
Thank you for all the advice. I did a test boil on 10 cups of the sap. Did not smell or taste bad. We boiled 97 gallons this weekend it took the entire weekend but it's done. This was by far the...
We collected all the sap on Saturday about 60 gallons and boiled it, it got cold Sunday and Monday. Started to warm up a little by Wednesday. Collected another 70 gallons (the trees were really...
We boiled about 75 gallons of sap and got 1 & 3/4 gallons of syrup over the weekend! Did not do the math on the sugar %, but this was the Best first boil we've had in 5 years.
This might be a dumb...
I loved to garden, landscape and refinish furniture. I've already started some seeds but no landscaping or furniture projects are on the schedule. I'm looking forward to February and March when the...
I would love to tap here in Washington County. We had such a short season last year and this past year everything has been happening a month early. Maybe the tapping season is a month early too. I...
They have only been down a few weeks.
We are in Washington County. I believe we only have about 8 or so of the Veneer logs, some 8' lengths and some longer. And they are very nice and straight.
I need some contacts for Cherry Veneer buyers. We have some very nice 8 ft to 16 ft lengths that we need to sell. I would appreciate some phone numbers of buyers in the area. Willing to travel a...
Thanks for all the great ideas. I am a small producer and managed to bottle 5 gallons last year. This year my hopes for that have been diminished because my Muscle helpers/fire keepers are busy...
Hi all, just another question. The instructions suggest wetting the filters in hot water or boiling hot sap prior to bottling. If fresh water is on/in the filter and hot syrup is added Won't that...
I have been lurking on the site for a few months now. I am in Washington County and getting ready for season 3.
I have no where near the operation some of these other operators have but it really...
We expanded a little this year. Bought another 25 taps and had 3 connections for food grade buckets. Our cost for the 2 years we have been addicted is about $500 and that was mostly for the pan. We...
We went ahead and tried the preliminary boil, experimental boil, reduce the fever boil... what ever it is called, and boiled down about 35 gallons and produced 7 half pints. The sugar content must be...
Well, the fever has reached a high degree. I have 18, 5 gallon buckets and we plan to go to the hunting woods and tap there. It will be a good experiment and we can save the trees we have at home for...
Here is a link to an interesting and sweet story about our favorite sugar, I found this on the FOX news website. Made me smile.:)

Hi neighbor (Jax)
I just may put a few taps in and see what happens. I was just worried if I put them in too early then I would somehow compromise the hole. I'll give it some more thought and wait...
The weather man gave a long range forcast yesterday to the End of January. Starting at the end of this week we are going to get below freezing temps at night and above freezing temps during the day....
Pro Football is over for us in SWPA. At least that will free up some time to gather wood. It's getting soooo close to our 2nd annual maple syrup party.
