Recently purchased a 12v marine diaphragm pump from Amazon for 16 bucks. I hooked it up to my 5/16 tubing and it dumps directly into my 55 gallon barrel. So far it works great.

Good luck with your education.
This sounds normal to me. the evaporation rate is going to slow down some because the sap is thicker and not as much water in it.
You could check out Bill Mason in Cornish. really nice guy and can get what you need.
Hydrometers can also be thrown off by temp. If you notice, they are actually calibrated (for some unknown reason) to be read at 211 degrees, not 219 that most of us actually do. I can only assume...
I went out and put in about 15 more taps today. The trees I drilled were running great. The others were doing pretty good too. fingers are crossed for more sap.
Most coffee urns only heat to about 180 degrees. finished syrup is around 219. I use a turkey frier with a valve on it.
I used a sawzall on mine. Worked good. keep a fire extinguisher nearby, just in case.
I got mine at cabela's. I bought the whole turkey fryer set up. I liked the pot because it has a drain valve that I use for bottling.
I am on my second year with a Mason 2X4. all I can say is I love it. Bill is a great guy to work with, very knowledgable about sugaring. his craftsmanship is great, and his prices are very...
Tapped Fri and Sat. pretty good run Sat
What you are describing is exactly what I do. I use a thermos full of boiling water to soften the tubing, only takes a few seconds. I have 25 taps on a 50 ft run all on 5/16" into a 55 gallon barrel...
I just put up tubing 2 years ago. I found this forum to be my best resource. Just remember, keep it tight and at least 5% slope. Good luck.
I have almost doubled the 3.5 gallons I made last year. Not bad for 70 taps
Yesterday I pulled about 15 gallons, about the same today maybe a little less.
Sounds like air from your barrel coming up the tubing. Mine does the same thing, so I would say it is normal.
I just bought a turkey fryer from Cabela's. The one I got has a spigot for bottling. I hang my filters inside and watch the temp (around 185). works fine with 5qt cone filters.
Someone on here posted that a while back. Sounds good though.
I bought 2X4 from him last year and am very pleased. He came highlly recommended from 3 guys I know with them. The qulity and workmanship are unbeatable, not to mention his invaluable expertise as a...
I have about 25 using this method, and have no problems. I did however drill the holes in the side of the buckets so that there is not a hole in the top for rain to get in. The holes are about an...
There are some pics in my photobucket. What are you wanting to tweak?
SWEEET !!!! Nice looking rig.
All this talk about ss versus black. Has anyone tried using automotive exhaust pipe? That is what i am using. It is fairly cheap, easy to work with, and should hold up to the heat pretty good.
I too am chomping at the bit, BUT, I agree with Tap. I'm going to wait one more week.
We like to have what we refer to as "gut busters". this is a large hambuger with Jalepeno Jack cheeze, 3 strips of thick bacon, lettuce, tomato, and onion, on a fresh bulkie roll. served with...
