It seems like every generation looks down on the younger generation in some fashion... I guess it's just part of getting old and bitter
General, not all of us get old and bitter. Some age and...
I'll be finished tapping today. Been slow going, I've never had so much squirrel damage/ blow downs etc. Bring it on !
I had an issue with a temp. probe that wad a year old and failed. I admit it was a long time getting a response from them, but it was replaced.
I'm convinced that my taps are drying up in spite of the check valves. The sap is still trickling in on vacuum, but nothing exciting.[/QUOTE
I was kinda thinking the same , but...
I'm hanging on . It ain't over till it's over.
I've had some very small runs the last few days. Temperatures have been ideal. I suspect the high atmospheric pressure and wind has been holding it back.
After my boil yesterday it appears that I'm at about 50% of a normal crop for me. Ran quite well on Thursday.
Thanks all.. I'm boiling with a 1.5" depth , but I couldn't remember how I arrived at that number. Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most.
I typically concentrate to 8-10%. I'm curious as to what depths others run their sap in the front pans?
Thanks
Food grade filter aid is very white. Is your press assembled correctly?
I had a small run between Noon Thursday and end of day Friday. Nothing to write home about, wait, does any body even write home anymore? Ran the RO , boiled Saturday, sweetened the pans and made a...
Finally finished today. Just checked the pumps and releasers. (8:35pm) sap coming in nicely. 38 right now, should run all night. Expecting to boil Saturday.
Hope to finish up putting taps in today. Get the pumps hooked up and start chasing down leaks. Looking like steady rain this afternoon. We'll see how far I get.

I plan to start working in the woods and drilling holes Friday. I don't expect much to happen. I just have a lot to do and I prefer to be working when it's not so cold.
In the long run it's better to have the leases. You cut the timber and it's not ready to cut for another 40 years or so. What usually happens is it gets cut then put back on the market. And the owner...
Total for me this year was 238 gallons on 880 taps . 1/2 on vacuum. 85 of the total tap count were 3/16 added 1/2 way through the season. I'm certainly happy with the production this season.
If you head to the western end of the Golden Road check out Dole Pond Maple he does have a sign out . Heckofa nice guy. Make sure to give logging trucks the right of way !
I'll have to walk it with my GPS. I'm thinking some of them are over 100' of drop
This is a picture of what ran last night at one set of 85 taps on 3/16th tubing. A tad over 200 gallons. My 5/16th didn't even come close. 16356
Running pretty good here right now on vacuum. Atmospheric pressure has dropped with this low coming in. I suspect that has helped. Probably my last boil tomorrow.
Finally cleared the 200 gallon mark today. Doesn't look like any more real freezes in the long range for me. Might get another run as there is still snow in the woods with frost underneath. I'll know...
As Sugarmaker said. This what I have done. Cut the bottom of the bucket out. You can seal around the bucket with food grade sealant if desired
You know I was thinking the same thing as 325abn . I've seen times when the sap is barely running, and you turn the vacuum on and things really come in . Once it's started nature will take over .
