Let them be..the sap wood is only about an inch and a half thick...you can try tapping the holes you drilled but it may leak with the poor wood
You most definitely do need the moisture trap!...and no it doesnt need to be freeze protected..although your pump will start easier if its room temp..drain the moisture trap daily..might not be...
Hey, check bascoms web page under used pans..plenty of choices there for a few hundred bucks..they are open for negotiation as well..then build a cinder block arch for it..that will get you through...
