Sap production here is 1/3 of last year.
Broke my sap hydrometer but bottled a few gallons today at 46:1
thanks for the info Big eddy. I knew someone on here would have the science behind it all./ much appreciated
So, just to be clear - even if the buckets are 90% frozen it's ok to chuck all the ice and the sugar will be concentrated in just the 10% liquid? I should have known this. Probably should have payed...
9gph with a mason 2/3 is very optimistic and 45 taps becomes a burden unless you have loads of free time
We probably all are guilty of saying “it’s just a few more taps” but when it becomes a...
absolutely nothing here all week. Flows have been erratic all season and sugar content is about 1.2%
We've had our highest production ever and also our earliest run. Began tapping Feb 5, two weeks early. Sugar content dropping from 2.2 to 1.8 but no sap flowing since the freeze-up last week. Will...
Tapped this weekend but almost nothing flowing in New Milford
Yield this year to date is 65% of last year with similar sugar content. Decent output the last few days with overflowing buckets.
We hung 35 buckets over the weekend in anticipation of the warming trend but have seen very low flows so far. About a quart per bucket in two or three days. Hardly worth collecting.
We had a surprisingly decent run here yesterday averaging about 3 /4 gallon per tap
But flows have been erratic at best and we are probably about half of what we did by this time
Last year
Thought we would be seeing some flows with this warming trend but buckets are all still empty. Anyone else getting sap?
Congrats on the move and bigger place. I think you'll like the 2x4. We're outgrowing our 2x3 - it does the job but takes too long for 40 taps. Bill Mason was a pleasure to meet - so knowledgeable and...
Hanging a few dozen buckets today. Flows seem good so far. Snow is too deep for my tractor so we're hauling equipment on sleds.
We collected an average of 1.5 gallons per tap today but see buds beginning to swell and we hear sugar content is dropping. This weekend will probably be our last boil since spring chores are...
G&D - No, I'm using wood but do finish with propane. Noah's Ark - I'm glad to hear the sugar content is better than last year. We boiled a bit tonight but didn't finish - should have my first...
Put a concrete floor in the sugarhouse and that delayed our start but finally hung 40 buckets yesterday with 1.5 gallons/day average.
Not quite ready to pull the plug. 40 gallons from 40 taps yesterday. Even with 62 degree temps only a few buckets were yellow. Running between 50:1 and 60:1.
decent flows today, which is a nice change from the last several days - 55 gal from 40 taps, but several buckets all yellow.
I think you are right about the lack of frost. We did a few thousand feet of fencing in late January and also excavated for the sugarhouse - there was less than 3 inches of frost in the ground on the...
Buckets dry yesterday. Except for that we've had very good flows for the last week.
Stop by anytime. Getting firebrick now and Hoping to get the evaporator set up today. We are across from the white barns. About 20 gallons today from 20 taps. Trees with southern exposure overflowing...
Behind schedule building our new sugarhouse but decided to hang a few dozen buckets today and boil outside if necessary. Sap flowing well. How is the sugar content this year?

if you are interested in boiling more sap, we can do about 30 taps but are not in a position to get a new evaporator this year. willing to split it with you.
in merryall section of new milford.
we can run about 30 taps this year if anyone in northwest ct (kent/new milford area) is interested in boiling for us and splitting the syrup. No evaporator here and a turkey fryer is too inefficient.
