That time of year again. Good luck to everyone. Nice getting around in the woods nice temperatures and not a lot of snow.
Trees are running on these short days. Looks like snow end of week then a couple frozen days. Season so far has been good. Only pumped 400 gallons of sap on ground last Friday, pump line came apart...
Dr.Tim have you ever heard of Star San acid sanitizer. Made by Five Star Chemicals. There web site is fivestarchemicals.com I know one producer that uses it, no bleach sanitizer.
They are running. Hopefully after this system that passes through today they I’ll let loose. Sitting on 2000 gallons so far. Weekend looks great.
As Dr. Tim says. No system is set it and forget it, especially 3/16. One leak can take away from 25 trees. Yes it is more leg work. But lol at the bright side, good for your heart. :D
We check3/16 line running into mainline, to clarify my last post.
Ya no bs. But watch for leaks daily. Walk mainline if it looks like vacuum leak or not moving climb hill and inspect. Squirrels or deer are not very good helpers.
4th year on 3/16 lines, haven’t cleaned them yet. Keep them tight. Put in new taps every season. If drop lines get dirty we replace them even sections of tubing between trees if they look black or...
Hopefully it is on. Close to 1100 tapped, be done tomorrow tapping. Easier tapping without 36+ inches of snow on ground. Running today but not gang busters, woods are still cold. Good luck to...
Great numbers there Mark. That is our goal to get a half gallon per tap, just made it this year.Could have been better but our one woods we had about 175 trees on a north slope that didn't run...
Anybody ever install one of them covers on them plastic tanks, that are made for hauling water in the back of a pickup? They have such little covers, one mounted in center would be nice.
A day of sunshine yesterday, trees ran good with the new snow on ground. Some of our trees facing the north even started to run, didn't know if they ever would this year, only about two feet of snow on...
Any body see the extended forecast. Might get spring after all. Lots of snow left out in woods.
Be nice if we could get some sunshine, and nights not down in the teens.Allot of snow in woods yet.Trees are running but slow.Manage to get 500-600 gallons of sap/day last two days.
Our one woods with 300+ trees produced 600 gallons yesterday.Other woods across road more north slope,700 trees produced 600 gallons,it is allot colder in that woods.
All tapped only took 2 days longer to tap this year with all the snow.Snow is still a foot or better in the woods.
Had 2000' of leader 2 years ago. This year replaced it with H20 line.Tried to tighten it up a few weeks ago and it started pulling off the CDL tee.The stuff is junk in my opinion.
Getting everything ready, start to tap this weekend.Still a foot or better of snow in the woods, different than last year.
We haul our sap in a 425 gallon poly tank on a F250 does just fine.
5/16 drops will work just fine Then you have a broader range of taps to use with the 5/16
H2o seasonal clear spout
We use 5/16 drops, new taps every year. The first year we averaged 24 gals of sap per tap, second year we averaged 22 gals per tap.The first year we collected sap for 30 days of the season, second year...
Our second year on are system,we have had some tee's at the drop line crack and had to replace.Sometimes if its at the tree you just have to tap the tap a little more.It is a learning experience.
On Craigslist there is a 600 gallon dari cool listed for $650.00 with washer and compresser.Listed under bulk tank EauClaire area.
Use a shop vac to suck out left over water.
