Good decision, Welcome back to paradise.
Good decision, best of luck on your return trip to paradise
On page three, first entry ,it is a beautiful structure. Don't worry Highland I'm not good with computers either.
That says it all. Thanks for posting.
I have the same evaporator and use a pre-heater next to the chimney. I also run the level deeper (about 3") . Fire often about every 5 minutes. If you have access to a dead elm tree, the brush from...
Well said Clinkis, Fighting amongst ourselves isn't going to solve anything
Some running a bit this afternoon, I'm hoping it runs most of the night and we can boil for more than a few hours tomorrow.
Nice shack and evaporator!! Very smart to put it up on blocks to save your back when stoking. Also approve of your big windows. good job and have a fun season. cvmaple
I have the same issue and I put a stick between the tree and the bottom of the bucket. That seems to straighten the bucket up and lift the lid off the front of the spile. This works if it is not too...
Very sorry to read this. Hope a bit of time heals the wound and there is always next year.
I tapped half of mine yesterday and they were running well. I never trust the long range forecast and my too short holidays are evaporating quickest of all, So I am putting in the rest of mine today....
Just a bit south of Belleville, Ontario. Forest
Nice job on the sugar house. And I thought I did a lot of free-cycling on ours!!! Have a great year.
I put in 25 today and most were running quite well. It's go time!!!! Yee-haw!!!!
You are cerainly getting a lot of good ideas here. I like Bowtie's idea of the winch (thinking outside of the box ,so to speak). I wonder if you could use a wire or cable to make a kind of a zipline...
Hope everyone is happy and well and 2013 is one of our best seasons yet.
That is a beauty. please post more pictures when you get further along.
Tell your wife I think the blog is great and to keep it going!! I alway's enjoy reading about syrup and gardening exploits. Sorry your season wasn't better but it was a very strange spring. I am...
I think who ever said poplar I think is pretty close It looks like a species known as Balm of Gilead. It has really rough bark with deep grooves in it and is soft so not a lot of btu's in it. The...
No it isn't. I boil on an 18" x48" and have a 15' x 13' building. I don't want a bigger evaporator in that setting and I don't store any wood inside. I hope this helps.
My neighbour transplanted sugar maple s in 1989 and he tapped them (5/16") last spring for the first time. My cousin in 1994 and he has some that are close to the right size. The trees with the best...
Just watched your video! Very cool, thanks for posting it and by the way you did just fine.
Yeah, that is a cool looking woodpile. Good to see some people are still splitting with an axe. I nailed a square piece of plywood on top of my chopping block and screwed a truck tire on top of that...
My shack has one side of the roof a lot longer than the other and has an opening on the end of the shack close to the chimney. This lets a lot of the steam out in all but the fastest of boils. May...
Got all next springs wood in and under a tarp. The sap shanty is sparrow proof ( so far so good ). All that's left to do is get some propane for finishing the liquid gold. Snow has landed just about...
