I tapped 55 trees today. The sap was running good and the temp got up to 40°F.
The arch paper is enough insulation to hold a bare hand on the side of the arch vs a bit too hot. My idea is that it will help extend the life of the arch. I'm 28 and I plan on boiling till at least...
You are correct!
So the website is a little misleading and tricky to understand. The photos are of a 2x4 being bricked except for the last photo which is a 2x3 all bricked. The differences between the standard and XL...
I used full bricks on the bottom and for the divider wall then halves on the walls. I used 26 fulls and 37 halves. I got a couple extra just in case and returned the unused ones. If you have any more...
Just wanted to post some pics to help anyone who might want a visual aid.20340 203412034220343 20339
I have a 2x3 hobby arch. Variable speed switch is a good idea. And installing it at the top of the gable end is how I understood the recommendation but thank you for clarifying it.
I can do that!
When I built my sugar shack I never put a steam vent on the roof. The steam was manageable with my homemade arch and open shack( no door and a window in the back). Now I have a wf mason arch and I...
I’ve stumbled upon the idea of using a de-icer in my sap tank. Not to keep it in liquid form constantly but turn it on a bit before I start boiling to thaw it out.
Quick note; On your phone before you upload the pic edit the dimensions of the photo to a square and you'll be all set!
Great! Thanks for all the quick responses! They seem to love sap. And a very cool read from johnallin!
16135 These are tiny bugs al around the maples and buckets. Anyone know what they are?
Yep. Not much going on here either. Monday looks ok.
I tend to grab a Moxie. Mmmm! Tastes great!
Should I take out the small trees in clumps like in picture 1? And is it ok to clean the evergreens out all at once in picture 2? 15862 15863
I have identified my trees as Norway maples. Do they tend to produce less sap?
Not really sure what type of maple they are. And I wasnt really picky about the depth of my holes but they are all 1.5" to 2" deep. So I guess I'll see how it goes tomorrow since it's going to freeze...
Trees are from 12" to 30" in diameter, I use 5/16 plastic spiles with tubing into buckets and the weather has been mid 30s at night mid 40s to 50s during the day.
So I have been noticing everyone else's numbers when they talk about how much sap they have so far and I feel like I'm not stacking up. I have 26 taps that have been exactly one week in great weather...
We've got rain coming so I was wondering if I should pull the tubes out of my buckets so the rain doesn't run down the tube and dilute the sap? The holes are in the sides of the buckets. Thanks!
Hello SEB! Just wanted to say I am also a blue hill-ian! If you need a hand with anything let me know.
