I live in South Central Pa. and our weather is certainly not the best for tapping. I hadn’t tapped for 3 years and decided this year I was going to tap again. I put 31 buckets out Jan. 31 and have...
Hat’s off to you young man. That is one beautiful sugarhouse.
Paddymountain,
Looks like things are going good for you. Weekend temps are certainly looking better then sixties next 2 days. Crazy season this year.
First boil sap was 2%, which is great for me as most of my trees are reds. Second boil sap was 1.5% which is normal for me. Need to get some cold nights to help wake the trees up.
Decided it was time to tap again after taking 3 years off. Put 32 taps in January 31. Weather has not cooperated much but that’s mother nature.
Trees run a little then shutdown for couple days. I’ve...
Season over for me. Pulled all taps today and did final boil. I thought my reds would start backup after warm spell but they just have not run since. Season was only 20 days long but I ended with a...
Since you've been tapped 4 weeks my guess is your trees are starting to seal the hole. I'm from sc pa and have only been taped since Feb 26. Yesterday I collected 20 gal. We folks on buckets have...
Not sure what your weather looks like or how long you've been tapped but I don't think the season is over yet at least in my area. The sap is running crystal clear yet for me, no signs of end of...
The wind is exactly why I bungee all my buckets to the tree. PITA unhooking them to dump the bucket but beats running all over the place chasing buckets. Good luck with your season.
Collected 28 gal of sap today. Boiled and got 3 pints syrup today. Sap tested at 2% today.
Looking good. Next picture will be seeing steam pouring out the cupola.
Trees thawed out mid afternoon. Dripping a little hopefully will run all night. Will collect tomorrow and start boiling again. Temps this week look good.
JRM,
I agree whole heartedly. Propane is certainly not cheap but being able to turn the burners off and walk away is worth the cost for this very small time hobbiest.
If the lid is sealed your good.
Great run today on sap. Collected 41 1/2 gal. this morning. Started sweetening the pans. Hoping the snow does not amount to much next couple of days. I still have snow in the woods and can't get my...
Season has begun for me . Tapped 32 trees and sap was running good. Next couple of days look good.
I had the exact same problem your having with these blue spiles three years ago. I went with the blue spiles because I wanted to get off the 7/16 spiles I used but with the 5/16 problems I had I...
Kudos to both structures. I love people who think outside the box, take what is readily available, and create works of art.
I switched from 7/16 to Sap-Meister 5/16. I tried the plastic 5/16 and they did not work for me. They leaked and would come loose. I bought the hooked spouts and use a 19/64 drill bit to tap the...
I use 5/16 Sap-Meister spiles for my buckets and when I used a 5/16 drill bit I had some leaking from the taps so I switched to the 19/64 bit and it took care of the leaking. The 5/16 should work...
Karen, you need to look into the Lapiere propane evaporator. I bought one 2 years ago and I love it. I tap about 30 trees and this raised flue evaporaor cut my boiling time in half.
If your positive they are not maples go ahead and pull the taps. However, if there is a chance they might be maples leave the taps in and wait till the weather changes. It's not a good idea to pull...
Bravo, Galena. I too am fed up with people who have no respect for Mother Earth. When are people going to realize once the forest and trees are gone life stops. Thank you for your candidness.
I've had moth, ants, flies, and tree dirt. Luckily no squirrels.
