Tapped 10 days ago. Glad to have a cold spell so I can catch up with the filtering/canning.

Crazy weather, so I tapped crazy early but so far so good.

Looks good after this quick cold snap.

I don't even try to filter without decanting. Even letting it sit overnight and then filtering all but the dregs at the bottom is so much easier.

Yesterday was my last boil. Today I'll pull taps.

Glad I started early. If I were going to try a stretch the season I would have to tap additional trees since the current taps wouldn't last 10...

I reheat the poured off syrup, filter and can it at around 185°F.

The filtering of the decanted syrup goes quick but still captures a little niter.

I don't discard the niter after the first...

I'm getting some of these Whiskey Barrel Chips to try in some home-brew and syrup.

  13. Does Garlic Mustard effect maple tree health?

So I’ve been spending more time in the woodlot lately and it seems like if it isn’t one invasive weed it’s another. The garlic mustard covers just about the entire forest floor.

    I read that garlic...

The inside floor space for my shack is 10x10 and it works fine with my 2x4 pan.

Being small helped minimize how the building codes and zoning effected the cost.
