Or get a section of Class A stovepipe where you are going through the roof. I often see it on Craigslist / FB Marketplace at a reasonable price (I purchased 24' x 8" for $100, used of course). The...
Maybe 1.5" of snow. I stopped by Brad's a couple days ago, thought he said he had bottled around 40 gallons.
Looks like I will pull taps on Tuesday. I have 225 gal to boil and expect another 300 by then so that will take care of my wood supply. Should finish the season with a little over 35 gallons of...
I am on a new Smokey Lake 2x6 this year with forced air, drop flue back pan and a 3 chamber syrup pan. I had the same issues as you.... When running 1.5" depth or less, my draw offs were big (2-3...
I learned after dumping 75 gallons a week ago that my sap hydrometer was reading at least .75 low. I also was reminded you can check a hydrometer in a cup full of water, it should float at 0%
...
Yep, I checked in water like Sugarmaker stated, it shows at least .75 low. My new hydrometer was right on. I marked on the case that it was low and figured it would become a back-up.

Well, this explains a bunch.... Unfortunately I had dumped 75 gallons last week to learn now that my hydrometer was reading a full point low.
Sugars are up to 2.0-2.1 percent but the soft maples were still around 1% when I checked on Sunday. The first couple runs on the soft maples had a metallic tasting sap, dumped it and the trees seem...
Soft maples started up today, although only 1.0% for sugar... I have another 25 bags to put up, hopefully will do it Monday.
I had 88 sugar maples only doing 1.0 - 1.2% earlier in the week. ...
Pictures can be deceiving but, it looks like your tap is too far into the tree? I have used those same style taps on metal and PVC holders without an issue.
Niter can / will form anytime you reach a boil, doesn't matter if it is sap, nearup, or syrup. To keep the niter out of your jars, you filter with the orion and a couple pre-filters (also at Fleet...
Tapped 44 of the soft maples today, not a drop...
All trees are sugars, first year tapping these particular trees. Have around 70 gal from 3/16 natural, checked sugar content of sap today and read 1.2%? I don't think that was realistic for early...
Good sun on about 30 of those taps, they are all hard maple. Slope is decent for 3/16" (guessing 25' from highest taps to collection). I haven't stuck a gauge on any of the lines yet but will...
Tapped 74 on Monday and then another 14 yesterday (all 3/16" tubing), checked around noon today, maybe 30 gallons... Don't think it got below freezing last night and is 36 degrees right now.
I am a little concerned that this year will be a very short season.....
Gonna tap this weekend or at least get the 3/16" lines strung on some new tapping property. Snowshoes again this year....
Cedar Eater is correct.
You are correct, I did put this out onto a forum for advice on how the state or fed's may interpret my plan / model. No where did I insinuate that I was trying to skirt the system.. There are grey...
Thanks for the responses. To be crystal clear, I am not trying to circumvent any rules / laws / requirements. I am simply trying to understand what registrations or licensing I need with this...
I am making the "plunge" next season from a hobby producer, giving syrup to family / friends / co-workers to selling for ultimately a profit. Have been thinking over the past couple years how I have...
Just bringing this thread back up to the top. Was very informative and pretty darn funny at times. Wondering how the last 8 years worked out for them?
Went into this week with just over 4.5 gallons of syrup after being tapped for 5 weeks. The last 5 days brought me another 5.5 gallons of syrup off of 68 taps. Had some long days and very long...
Assuming you mean 25 gallons of syrup??
When the temps fail to fall below freezing at night, the sap eventually stops. Even if it is dripping a bit, the sugar content will be way down. (it...
