Pulling taps and cleaning lines today in CNY
Same here all dark syrup even late January run. We made some
amber last year that was low 50s on the Hanna meter.
Have not made any light syrup during these mild winters and its been 5 years since...
It's been low in our bush at 1.4-1.6%. We have 60:40 reds to sugars and usually run 1.6-1.8%. No winter dormancy a likely cause.
We might go early next week near Ithaca. The big operations we know in CNY and north country are tapping now.
Isn't that the truth. The last 3 years our season has ended around St. Patrick's Day. Our season this far south is 3-4 weeks with a good run or 2. In the late 80s I worked in St Albans, VT and...
Slow start to the run in CNY also
The window to sugar south of the St. Lawrence River is slowly closing. There will be good years but the pendulum swings (just like the weather) will make it difficult to sustain.
I started boiling a small batch of sap that was a bit cloudy but otherwise seemed fine but it smelled like wet cardboard as soon as it steamed with no maple aroma. I discarded. This was the day after...
Our season ended Monday with very dark #23. I startup a small boil on Tuesday evening and as soon as it steamed I could smell wet cardboard and no maple. Red maple buds have doubled in size in the...
1 gall/tap on 3/16 between yesterday afternoon and this morn. That was a surprise. Buckets finally filling also. Unexpected boiling day in Tompkins
Yes underwhelmed is my feeling in CNY. 110 gallons with 140 taps, most on 3/16 tubing. Was expecting double that volume. Last week our sugar was low at 1.3-1.5%. This week it is 1.8-2.4%. Tap sugars...
Same conditions in the Southern Tier. Deep heavy snow pack and frost in the ground. 2nd warm up should be the gusher.
Our snow pack is up to 3' in Dryden and long term forecast is very cold. Time to dig/plow ATV trail to the sap tank and snowshoe trails to our bucket trees. At least this snow pack should extend...
Tapped last week in Tompkins and had a good first run. Sugar content was low at 1.4% but sap was clear and cold.

Bottled the last of the season today and cleaning up. Intense 3 weeks. We collected 10 gallons sap per tap and bottled 23 oz syrup per tap. Had filtering challenges the last 2 boils. Checking out a...
1.7% today, last boil tomorrow. Started pulling taps. It was an intense 2 weeks in the sugar woods.

Same in Tompkins. Another boil or 2 this week and then we are pulling taps before it turns funky. Our last run ended up being even lighter amber than the one before. Really surprised me.
Finished amber yesterday in Tompkins and boiling today. I think this batch will be dark. Sap is running clear but changes are occurring; trees with good southern exposure are slowing down and a few...
Same story in Southern Tompkins County. Late start to the season, sugar content is up and flow over the past 2 days has been highest per tap (average 2+ gallons/24 hr) that I have observed in 6...
Never thought it possible, but this could be the year that we do not boil in March. Nothing but dry taps and some frozen sap from trees on the southern edges since end of Feb. Our sugarbush is at...
Just over 6 gallons bottled on 100 taps with buckets; 50:50 sugar and reds. Minimal flow in past week and 10 day forecast looks to be too cold in our area. Hoping for a strong finish. Was prepared to...
Check calibration temp on hydrometer and take temp of sap in tank. I have one from Bascom that says 38F. You add 0.1% sugar to reading for approx every 10F in higher sap temp. Most maple books have a...
1.4-1.6% in Tompkins County

105 gallons in the tank at 1.2% in Tompkins County. Sugar content ran low last year also. We were in the epicenter of the 2016 drought and I have read that it can take up to 2 years for the trees...
