I've actually had pretty good luck putting a splice in, as an alternative to replacing the lateral from drop to drop. I clamp the line on the upstream and downstream side of the chew hole, then cut...
What a luxury it is to have PMRC and crew to actually test all the things our brains think up during hours of tapping. I've thought a million times about how to access the sap in the outer rings and...
I've switched all mine to using hollowcore rope around the tree. The tree rats don't seem to be interested in that nearly as much.
Thanks everyone - I did end up finding the Cornell calculator and it was definitely easy to use.
We've never sold sap before, but this year I think we will. I went to the UVM sap calculator website, but its above my pay grade. Anyone care to just comment on what you're paying/getting for sap...
I was thinking about this one myself recently. I've always just plugged them into the T, then cut the CV off and replace during the following winter. But I wondered, since there are so many more...
Using hollow core rope on 3/16 was a game changer for me.
Ok, thanks. It seems to be running strong and pulling good vacuum, so I'm going to assume its good. I haven't been able to get into the woods for a run since then due to work, but we're getting...
Its a valid question. I think the part that was concerning was simply that I can stand at a tree with a 3/16" drop and watch the ball moving in the CV. I can visually see the sap moving through the...
Yes sir, leak free, good vacuum and plenty of slope.
I did change the T's as well. When I make the drops at home, I always put a new T on the bottom.
I'm beginning to think everything is fine. We...
Ok, thats good to know. When I put the 5/16" drops in I expected to see 3 things:
1. Sap moving through the CVa
2. Sap moving down the 3/16 lats
3. Sap in the bottom of the 5/16 drop
I...
Thanks Flats -
So you can see a little sap moving through the clear CV's on a 5/16 drop with 3/16 lateral when the sap is running - meaning everything is under vac?
This is season 4 on many of our 3/16 lines, so before tapping I was cutting out both the taps and the drops. While doing that I thought I'd experiment with using 5/16" drops. For those of you doing...
I pulled 'em....I'm going fishing....
25k gallons from 750 taps...wow, thats solid.
Any strategies on locating a plugged T? I'm thinking if its late in the season, I can check each one in a run, since I try to keep it 20 taps to a lateral, and that wouldn't take me long.
But...
I have a 3/16 run of 23 taps, and its around 700ft. The line and drops are 3yrs old. I snipped off the old taps and put on brand new CV's this year, but due to a miscommunication last season, the...
That looks like it came out pretty good SCM. Is it hard to export? I'd like to do this, but on a topo. It would be helpful to walk a route I'd like to lay out 3/16", then when I'm done, see how...
One of the kids at VTC just came up with a new design that actually won their design contest this year, but I haven't actually seen it yet.
I experimented with a single but accurate gauge last year, and if it was running hard, it was atleast 20 minutes to build vacuum again.
I don't post a ton in this forum and screwed up the quoting...
You're over 100 gallons of syrup from 750 taps General? Wow, that sounds like the start of a great season.
I'm with wermdurt - I love it, but only because my only alternative is 5/16 gravity. If I had the option of running mechanical, I'm not sure I'd ever roll out 3/16.
I ran into a similar situation this weekend, and I decided NOT to tap the 2 trees that would require the long drop lines.
Does anyone know the length a drop can get before you run into the "Y"...
ahh, Ok, this is starting to come together now. There are so many options, its hard to figure out the optimal one.
It sounds like this....
year 1 on a new 3/16 lateral:
- use 5/16 drops with...
