Pulling out taps, cleaning and storing tomorrow. Seems like last year we were just getting going this time of March...
Still, buds starting to show on many trees, so maybe only a weekend or two left (we'll see).
Another more than decent run this weekend. Turning out to be a good season; 8+ gallons so far from ~40 taps. Great flavor this year. Also got a nice mention in the March issue of Valley Table mag if...
Sorry I was slow getting back on my own thread. Turns out tapping early was a good call; solid runs on and off for the last 3 weeks just south of Newburgh, NY. 5 finished gallons from about 40 taps...
Glad to see a bunch of y'all got tapped early. I was really debating it. Tapped last week of Jan been busy since! Good season so far! Already have 5 gallons in hand and the last couple of days were...
Can't hold out with the coming very warm snap. Had 3 liters from one test tap yesterday (!!) so gonna tap this weekend. weird season, at least south of Albany it is. Will post how it goes.
Hung a bucket yesterday to test and got nada today despite temps in 40s. Hopefully my elevation is helping delay the flow despite unusually warm conditions.
Anyone with more experience have an opinion about this warm weather? I usually don't tap until 17Feb or later, but the dang weather has me second guessing myself... This coming week looks really ripe...
Firewood = down to the last few worm-eaten sticks. I figure to burn pretty much everything that's been lying around by the end of the coming weekend. About 1/4 of my taps are out now (budding tips is...
Crazy big runs the last week or so in eastern Orange County. Took in an average of just under 2 gallons per gravity tap (!!!) on Saturday and expect a pretty big run today/tomorrow. Might exceed 10...
Another 25 in on Sunday. Snowshoes on my feet and snow falling on my head; still, looking pretty good this coming week. We might be swimming in sap by mid-week next week.
At 2 pm yesterday had a decent flow going on the south side of about 1/2 the 30 taps I put in. Looking good for next weekend...!
I'm thinking today's the day (Orange County). Will put in 20-40 today and start hoping. Anyone produced a drop in the LHV yet?
I guess without optimism, a Maple Man is nothin'!
Great run the last 4 days; looks good through maybe next weekend. Anyone else?
Went nuts here last two days. Took maybe 1 to 1.5 gallons of sap per tap between Friday afternoon and sundown Saturday. I'm at 450 ft, so relatively cold. Some trees on buckets just started...
Maybe I spoke too soon... big run last night and temps look good this coming week. I guess part of sugaring is being an optimist.
Heading for a pretty poor season in terms of total production. Weather report AGAIN looked like prime sap weather today, only to change to colder and cloudier this morning. I'll be lucky to get a...
Still not much flow; itching to get started, but only took in between nothing and maybe 8 oz per tap today. Then looks frozen solid through Thursday next. Slow start to the season! Boo hiss...
George - Got an OK run last weekend, but frozen solid until a little bit this afternoon. Maybe tomorrow?
Almost nothing on the first few taps through yesterday morning. Put in another slug today - running clear and fast, so maybe I'll get a chance to make some steam tomorrow. Maybe...
First taps in last weekend, but nothing yet. Next 4 days look good, though! Anyone else trying to see if we'll get a good run through Saturday?
Just stuck in first few taps in Orange on Saturday; will put in the rest next weekend. Nothing as of yesterday noon, but that's what you'd expect.
Anyone else seeing some of the red maples getting furry in Orange yet? This warm couple of weeks has got my trees getting too enthusiastic by far for January... Has me worried it might be a tough...
I'm also in Orange. Tapped first week of FEB last year and did fine - 2013 was a great season for unsophisticated gravity-types like me. Hope the weird weather won't wreck this year's harvest...
Great to hear it turned out well for you as well. Had a good time with my tiny operation and made some fantastic syrup this year; more taps next year? Only time will tell....
