I also place a flat stone on the lid of the bucket and except for really high winds I have no problem.
We are at 1,900 feet and I do see times that guys just a few hundred feet lower then us have sap run and we are still froze up.
Merry Christmas to all Traders!
Great job! I built almost the same unit my self and it boils like crazy.
I just put a new piston in a Husky 350. A very easy job. Piston ring and wristpin on eBay $25.00 Lots of rebuild videos on YouTube. My cylinder had no grooves just aluminum on the wall. Cleaned it...
Wow, I love it!
I agree with Bricklayer. I turn them inside out and wash them with hot water with the sprayer. ( I do have a garden hose sprayer on my faucet) After the season I do the same and then put orlon and...
That is a dream shack. Very very well done!!
I have a 3/4 inch black mainline that is about 10 years old. At the end of every season I backwash this mainline and laterals with hot water ( I have access to a hose and hot water) and I do the same...
Chris, losing 6 out of 7 sucks. I only have 2 and so far they have both made it. I feel mighty lucky!
Boiled 40+ gallons yesterday and 30+ today. Taps are still running and the syrup tastes good so we are still in business. Couple weeks ago we were boiling so much we were sure we would have a record...
Had a deep freeze and 2 warm days and sap is only trickling in. How is everyone else doing?
I also agree on making the firebox a little deeper. It is the one thing I would change on my arch if I had to do it over. Check out my build in my photos.
Welcome Mapl3Mike. Half way thru your season you will be addicted. And there is no looking back!
Wow Maplewalnut, the forecast here is one warm night and all the rest below freezing. What a difference a few miles can make. I boiled 5 days in a row this past week and if the forecast is right it's...
Taps have finally stopped running and we should get below freezing tonight but I don't think it will be low enough or long enough to recharge them. It was a hell of a run. I boiled the last 2 days...
Agree Mike, ours are still running like mad.
Has anyone else had this happen? I noticed last year that there is a slight belly in the 3 channels of my pan. Everything else is fine with the pan but there is some sagging front to rear in the...
Bottled up our first couple of boils today. Made Golden and Amber. This is the first time in years that we have made Golden. Had very little niter in the pan after 3 boils and the syrup went right...
I only have a couple of silvers but as others have said the are finicky. When I collect I never know if they will be empty, full or half full. Temperature, wind, rain or whatever they have a mind of...
I make beer with sap every year. I use 5 gallons of sap and I use a brown ale extract kit. As has already been said here the yeast will ferment most of the maple sugar and flavor out. To make up for...
Great run the last 2 days. Boiled today and will boil again tomorrow. Taps should run dry tonight and I don't think it is going below freezing tomorrow night so we should be down for a while.
It sounds like you have a niter buildup laying in the bottom of your pan. Clean your pan before you boil again.
From what I have seen the big wide and long stains were from 7/16 taps. Now that most use 5/16 taps the stains seem the be much smaller. I know the stains were small on some Maples that I have had to...
