Yes, I saw some sap alright, but he wasn't what I was expecting, lol.
I got about 15 litres from 25 taps yesterday, that's just a tease now isnt it!!
No snow up here yet.

Surprise I got about 25 gal of sap today:lol:
Yesterday made another 13 l of syrup and woke up this morning to 5" of fresh snow. Still waiting for the bush to wake up will be lucky if I make half what I did last yr:(
55 litres of sap from 44 taps from Tuesday until today. I thought it would be a good week but I was wrong. We didn't get any snow here 0c yesterday and -5c today
Every year I add more taps hoping for more sap but that is not happening (yet).
Well it finally happened the trees woke up today and gave me about 120 gal of sap the best day by far this year and there was no sun go figure and really not that warm was sure surprised:cool::lol:
Trees ran all night went out to collect and sap running over the top got another 90 gal this morning boiled all day will finish up tomorrow .
Good to hear that the sap is starting in the north. I put in 60 taps this week end and only collected a marginal amount last night. Snow depth is 4 feet. I had to pack down the snow around the tree to hang the buckets so as not to have them too high when it finally melts away. The buckets look odd hanging on the tree, level with the snow. The forecast from today on looks good for sap flows. Fingers crossed. Hopefully have enough the sweeten pans this weekend.
When it does start to run up there how long will your season be ? It looks like this weekend might be the end down here but weather man has been wrong before:confused:.
Yesterday I made another 15 l of syrup and collect about 65 gal of sap will probably boil again today. Not sure how everyone else's syrup is in colour but mine for some reason is lighter in colour this year its always been dark in previous yrs.
Boiled yesterday ended up with another 12 l will maybe boil again today depending on what mother nature gave me last night then we are in for a warm spell will it be over wait it out and see :)
Trees must of run all night again had another tsunami sap running all over the place  gave me something to do for the day:) another 12 liters today:cool:
Sorry dlee, I dont think there is a real answer to that question. It depends on mother nature I guess, but this is only my third year.
I've collected 75 litres of sap from 44 taps on drop tubes into 20 litre pails in 7 days that I will boil tomorrow, not a good rate happening up here yet. Good thing is the buckets keep ice in them so I'm only collecting every 7 days and boiling then, and the sap is still clear as water.
I think the 2 feet of snow that is still on the ground and the 2 inches of ice underneath that are having an effect on things.
Taps have been in for 2 weeks now and still not really producing.
Keep on sapping
Well hope it soon breaks for you we got flooded with sap this week but has slowed down due to warm weather, made another 12 liters today might be lucky and get one more boil will see what mother nature brings .
The little flow we had stopped as well due to warm nights but it should thaw the rest of the bush out and the rain today should help as well. Hopefully the weather cooperates a bit better this week, I would hate for it to be over before it starts like last year.
Burned through 75 litres of sap today in 6.5 hrs. to get almost 1imp. Gallon 67 brix, syrup but I poor man ROd it so not sure what the sugar content of the sap was. I ordered a sap hydrometer so I can keep track, should be in this week.
Wow, rough season again eh? Hope it gets better for you as I know last year was tough as well.
Have these been atypical years or is this the norm for up there?
I'm in Huntsville and having another strange year. Had 50 trees tapped last year and only made 27 liters of syrup. This year I bought 50 sap bags and upped my production to 100 trees. The weather has been lousy and there is still 2 feet of snow around my trees. Started tapping mid-March and had first boil on March 25th and made 5 liters. Had a couple of mediocre runs of 35 to 40 gallons. Yesterday was warm and only got 9 gal. It didn't freeze last night and today I got nothing. Hopefully it is not over because all I've made is 18 liters of syrup from 100 trees....pitiful.
Hope this is not the new norm with climate changes.
We may get another run on wed and thurs temp is in our favor yea sounds like I did ok compared to some good luck this week
Ya, I just ration what I do get and I'm happy with it. Like I said last year, there will be a few stockings short of a bottle of syrup next Christmas, lol. I'm glad I don't do this to make money.
Not sure what the norm is around this area, but normal for me as its only my third year. I just keep telling myself its early yet. Weather forecast looks good this week, but I've also been saying that since mid March. LOL
I did get a few of these from yesterday's boil though :) it's actually lighter than the picture shows, and like a lot of people are reporting, lots of niter.

Went out thinking there would be hardly any sap and collected 40 gal and tomorrow should be better.
Well it was right around 0 when I went out to look but last night it was -2 and high is suppose to be 5 so might get another run I am thinking but its been a strange season days when I thought it would run it just trickled out and days when I thought it wouldn't it did so go figure. And yes to the long range forcast lol its changes day by day
:oWell went out around 4 to check the sap and much to my surprise was running good temp was only 1 and it was cloudy go figure got 60 gal for the day. Think there will be that much again in morning if not more. Thought this year wasn't going to be near as good as last year but am very happy with what I am going to end up with .
Checked my lot last weekend, only about 100 liters of sap from 200 taps ( just east of Mattawa) Returning tonight and hopefully tanks are full

Hello everyone, I'm just at the north end of North Bay, been tapped in since April 1st. Put in 60 taps this year and I'm setting up for my first boil tonight. My 55 gallon is full plus whatever ran in the last day. Starting to look like a repeat of last year. First batch should be quick because I've been ditching a lot of ice from my buckets while collecting.
Good luck northwood! The first boil of the season is always the most rewarding. :)
That's good news I'll be heading to west Nippissing to collect a weeks worth from last Saturday
Just got my sap hydrometer and my reds are producing 4% straight out of the bucket, WOW, haven't checked my sugars yet.
The past days of rain have opened things up in the bush finally.
Good luck this week Northwood
Well that's it for me sap was still running but not enough to make me want to fire her up again. Yesterday I made another 15 liters and what I thought was going to be a bad year turned out good one. Now is the time for the clean up and get ready for next yr.
Good to hear everyone except the people in northern Ontario are having a good season.
100 Litres from 44 taps in 7 days, not what I was expecting. At least the sugar content is high in some of my trees, 4% in my reds and only 2.8-3.4 in my sugars. And I was going to take one of my reds down because it's got a lean toward my house, hmmmm tough decision
You're right Karen, the first boil happened Saturday, got about 4 litters of nice amber syrup. Collected and boiled again Sunday until the weather turned cold and windy. Next couple days looks promising for a good run but, one thing I've learned over the years is never assume the trees will co-operate just because the weather is good. Still a good 2 feet of snow in my bush.
No real good sap runs again this spring, but I did manage to get about 13 litres of grade A golden syrup from 360 litres of sap, on 44 taps, 5/16" plastic on drop tubes to buckets.
Some trees just started running last weekend so I'm going to leave my taps in for one more week and see what happens, temperatures dont look promising but who trusts a weather "prediction".
Pulled taps today on Manitoulin Island , all in all not a bad season 62 trees tapped made 38 litres of syrup from 1215 litres of sap ! Attachment 20027
Pulled all my taps today, not worth leaving them for another week
Went from winter to summer pretty fast again this year.
Some trees didn't even have a chance to run.
I think i'm probably one of the last ones in the province still collecting good sap. I was all ready to pack it in after only 2 weeks of slow sap runs, and then the the forecast called for two or three nights of freezing. Cleaned out my pails and sure enough the sap started up again on Sunday. Probably running slow today as well so tonight i'll get to burn up what's left of the firewood. Hopefully get a few more litres of late season dark. Still 6 inches of snow in my bush. Same as last year, almost into May and boiling sap.:o
Wow! Keep at it Northwood!!!
All done!
The sap ran Sunday and Monday thanks to the -5 temps overnight. Boiled late into the night to get through 70 gallons of sap. Low sugar but that's to be expected. +12 to 16 through the weekend so that will be a good time to clean up. Finished with about 24 liters of syrup from 60 taps. Not a great year but the syrup i did get was all great quality. Have a great summer everyone.
Good job Northwood glad to hear you got some finally I could of went a little longer but started to clean up and didn't want to start dirty things again. Have a good summer 2
