I just got Bascom's flyer the other day. I looked in awe at the huge maple tree on the cover with 11 plus buckets on it. If it has as many buckets on the back side there must be almost 20 taps on one tree!

I noticed that too. I thought thats a good way to kill it. I know its a big tree but come on.

I think the Bascom picture is an old one. On my great grand fathers dairy farm they had an old sugar maple near the barn that they tapped back in the 1910-50's. grand father said they put at least 6 40 qt milk cans on it every year. they made sugar for kitchen use. His version was that it would fill these cans on a good day. In 1990 when I tapped on the farm it was still alive but storms had broken much of the crown out. New owner cut it down last year. I would have liked to see cross sections from it.

Maplemaker, no I have not decided on Bascom's yet so many things going on. Trying to get some more brush burned before the season ends on May 1st. I'm taking some pines down that are overpowering some maples.
