What do you guys use to scrub your Flue and syrup pans?

Do you all use the brushes form the maples guys or do you all use something cheaper and that can be picked up local?

I need to find something to get down into the flues and I ws hoping to brush it out while I was doing a test boil in the next few weeks.

You can try veggie brush or glass brushes but they just aren't heavy enough. Try this mix 1 gallon of white vinegar with as much boiling water to cover your flues. let it sit for a few days boil it slightly if you like and your flue pan will be super shinny. I did it the end of the season WOW like new!!!

but you kinda do have to spend the money to get a good one I think. I have a flue brush for the under side but not for the inside.

LMAO as soon as I seen this thread I knew you were going to say that. I bought a lint trap brush from Ace Hardware and it lasted about a year. It is the perfect size and length to get into the topside of the flues. Nylon bristles wraped around a metal rod deal. Wore it out and bought a nice heavy duty one at the Verona Maple Conference last year.

Food grade and toilet brush two words that I thought would never go together :)

Food Grade toilet Brush. Now that may be a hard find!

Thanks Haynes.

Talking about the underside of the pan, how often do you all clean it. Is it before every boil?

I was thinking about going to Verona again this year maybe I will pick some up there.

Well -- Maybe not. If it is a used toilet brush - it has made contact with all types of processed food in the toilet bowl so should work just fine..... All my bologna aside - a new toilet bowl brush is just about the perfect shape for most cleanup -- pans - buckets etc. On your flue tubes (not sure of your diameters) would a shotgun brass cleaning brush and rod work (ha - a new one) ----- Mike

Definitely! As soon as I read that tip from Haynes last year, I laughed and then went out and got one. It's perfect for scrubbing things out after a good vinegar soak. My toilet has never looked better either. Seriously, it's a great solution.

I burn pine so things can build up quicker than hard wood. So brush the underside before every boil. I just make it part of my pre-boiling routine!!!
