Anyone know how to control the pine borer in their sugar wood? Or is it not worth worrying about?

I have 4+ chord of cut, but not split, pine for next year. It's only been cut since May/June and there are already huge piles of sawdust everywhere. I have all the wood I need for this season and am collecting for next season, but I don't want to find out that 1/2 my pine is getting eaten by the borers.

Thanks

good luck with that. you'll need to submerge the wood in water. alternatively, get it all cut up and split, then into covered storage.

or, don't worry about it. they don't consume that much.

They just leave air channels for faster burn, not a bad thing.

So thats what the little piles of shavings are. Do they also make a funny sound or is that something else living in my wood pile? Do they look like a big maggot? If so i saw some inside the pine when i was splitting it.

Yes, you can hear them chomping away. They are very frequently mistaken for the Asian Longhorned Beetle, however they only attack weak or dead conifers.

Split the pieces and watch the chickens fight to peck those little grubs out of the wood, cheap entertainment!

That would be fun to see. Some times I will put one on the hot muffler to watch it squirm.
