Brian -- Welcome back -- Good luck on the new sugar shack. I must admit - if my little sugar shack burned down - I would be bummed out. But dang! 30 years - that is a record bummed out..... Hey - 20' x 24' is a nice size sugar house - how big a set up you planning on? -- Mike

Hi again Brian - Wow - I'm really impressed. Thanks for the pictures - that is really going to be a solid building. Ha - my idea of heavy framing is 2 x 6's and 4 x 4's....... make lots of maple --- Mike

Me and my father in law started framing the the walls yesterday on the new sugarhouse and it is going good.Puting alot of straping in between the studs for the shiplap, which is time consuming. Hopefully i will have some pictures of the progress towards the end of the week. My 2x6's look like twigs compared to the monster lumber that you have.

I have to agree with 3rdgen that is one cool crane that you got there.
What can I do with a 20' log, a tractor with a bucket, a few chains and straps? A crane of course!
Oh by the way nice look sugarhouse, I love timber framed stuff.

You know after coming back to this post it reminded me of the days when I was a production manager at a printshop. Owners built a new shop and put in an upper storage level. What he failed to reconize was that we could not fit a forklift in the building with a high enough lift on it to reach the upper level to put skids of paper up there. About a month goes by and I came back from lunch and these knucklehead employees thought it was a good idea to put a skid on one forklift then lift that forklift into the air with the bigger one and raise it in the air. Then the Donkey on the forklift that was raised in the air raise that boom up till it reached. I just walked in at the point they were driving the bottom forklift forward. It was not the safest thing I ever seen. After that deal I sent them all to a OSHA certified forklift training course. Those 2 guys thought I was being overdramatic with all the gestures I threw there way. Atleast they strapped the top forklift to the forks on the bottom one lol.

Now that is funny. Did they Duct Tape the Stoner in the top fork lift to his seat too? When they say - Life is stranger than fiction - It sure applies here. Hard to get good help like that in these times. ..... Thanks for the story - made my day.........

Westernmainer please stop posting pictures of your sugarhouse. You are making all of ours look like outhouses lol. Well atleast mine anyways. Seriously though it looks real good and I dont think you have to worry about it falling down anytime soon.

How did you attached the purlins to your rafters?
western mainer

The purlins are cut in to the rafters, with help of a router and a jig I made up.

So, what you did was rout out a recess in the rafter to create a shoulder for the purlin? How deep did you cut that recess and are your rafters green timber? From the look of your construction I would assume you have quite a bit of experience so I'm guessing you accounted for shrinkage in the width of your rafters?
The building is really looking great. What kind of sawmill are you using to cut your timber?

I set the pockets in 2 1/4 inches. I have a Norwood 15 HP mill. as for the shrinkage, that's part of the looks.

Sorry if I gave the wrong impression, I wasn't suggesting the timber shrinkage would make the roof look bad. I was just wondering how much you recessed the purlins to make sure they wouldn't fall out when the rafter shrank down. 2 1/4 inches is a pretty deep pocket though so that's obviously not going to happen.

Like the beam work. I am in the process of building a new sugar house, and was wondering if anyone knows how far from the roof rafters the smoke stack needs to be. I purchased a new 20 x 66 maple pro evaperator and looks like I can be installing it in two weeks. This has been more work than I anticipated.

It is standard pipe that came with the unit. I was planning on using backerboard that is used in the evaperator prior to installing the fire brick to line the opening. Rafters are 24" on center.

I have trusses in my building and they are on 24" center. I have a 10" stainless stack and I have the inside of the trusses that are adjacent to the stack covered with 1" ceramic blanket about 2' out past each side of the stack. Might sound like overkill, but I don't have to worry about it and the purlins on the roof are covered too. Sometimes my stack temps have went above 1700 degrees, so I like the peace of mind.

Wow It's been a long time. Well some of the tubing is up,the rest will wait as we got a foot of snow today here is a picture of the small evaporator in the sugar house. The house isn't done but good to get started as we wasn't even going to start this year but this came out of the blue.

Well it's been awhile. Today the 500 gallon head tank showed up, and we went to Petes in NH. and got a used 3 bay stainless sink with 2 side boards and a 30"x60" stainless table. Now to get water to the sugar house. I still have tubing to put up.

As for temp control open the doors and let cool air in. The evaporator is insulated so it takes 2-3 hours to get thing heated up in the space that is 20X 28'
