I know a guy who is looking to buy sap but not to make syrup with. he is willing to pay .50-.60 cents a gallon for sap as low as 1% sugar. If you could get that much for your sap would you sell it or would you make syrup?

Paul,
Sure is a good price for low test sap (less than 2%). If I was a new producer, I'd go for it and not invest in the other equipment. Can you sell him part of your crop (later season, lower testing) and continue to make syrup with the rest? That way you could maintain your retail markets....

I know for me there is only about a 5000.00-6000.00 dollar difference. thats not taking into account the cost of containers , filter paper , filter aid and the time to pack the syrup. It`s very tempting. I think that once the sap got below 1% he wouldn`t buy any more because we all know what the sap gets like below 1%.

What's he want it for if it isn't for making syrup?

If syrup is at $2.60 /lb, 2% sap would be worth $.66 a gallon. Do the math---it might be worth it!!

If he is drinking it how much would he want? seems like if he can use large quantities he must be more than thirsty!

does it really matter what this guy is doing with the sap? He`s paying enough to do what ever he wants to do with it. The question is do we make syrup or do we sell sap, both of which will give us our bottom line.

I would sell him sap... . At 1% it would be the same as $43 per gallon. for .50 sap. 51.60 for .60 sap. And you dont have the expense of boiling or bottling..... No brainer How much is he looking for. At 2% you start adding water to make it lower.

why would you add water at 2% this guy will buy it all or do you add sugar to your 1%.

heck.... if he pays the same for 1% as for 2% I will sell water all day for .50 per gallon

... and then it's not pure sap which is what he wants and is paying for which would be dishonest.

Actually, people do add water to syrup when it is made a little heavy. We have still never heard what he will be using the sap for exactly.

Thad

This guy wants to bottle and sell sap water.I know that sounds crazy but hay in this world of health crazy people anything could sell if it`s healthy for you. If this should fly i don`t think he will be buying any sap from you though.

for that use you would not add water.... maybe he should also consider bottling and selling permeate. That would give him a second product.

Guy in Greenbay tried selling the Permeate bottled water and without the right minerals in water it tastes like crap. Good tasting water isnt just distilled water.

THIS GUY WANTS TO BOTTLE AND SELL SAP WATER. There are plenty of vitamins and minerals in sap water. He will pastureize , filter , and bottle and sell it. He said it would be good for the syrup industry too because with all the sap he is going to buy and bottle it will make a shortage for making syrup and that will bring the price of syrup up.

There's an amishman near me selling preheater runoff, it tastes crappy as well. He's also purporting health benefits. Meh.

It's been tried before, they aren't in business anymore. Good for the guy trying to be an entrepreneur, but I doubt it. As for affecting syrup prices, somewhere north of 32 million gallons of sap was collected in in Vermont alone last year, it'd take a lot of bottles of sap being sold to impact syrup production volume. My two cents.

Matt
I will be boiling My sap. It`s what i like doing, there are a few folks out there that just sell sap and this gives them another option, as we all know there isn`t much money to be made in selling sap. Until now
