I recently purchased a Surge sp-22 to replace my surge rotary vane pump. I am trying to pull 24 in of vacuum with this pump.

Does anyone know what is the required HP for an electric motor to drive the pump? I obviously what to use as small a motor as possible, but I need it to be reliable as well.

Also, does anyone have a recommended rpm to turn the pump at?

the Surge chart reccomends a 1.65 hp electric motor with a 14" pulley on pump and 3.5" pulley on motor. If you want to turn it slower, they also say you can run a 1.10 hp motor with a 14" pulley and 3.25" pulley.

getting 24" out of it might be pushing it...run good oil in it and put a box fan on it and you might be okay...

Does your pump have the original pulley on it? The original pulley has spokes that are tilted like fan blades to push air over the pump head. You want a motor that turns 1725rpm not 3450rpm to use the stock pulley sizes. The pump head should turn at 400rpm. If you have the fast motor you will need a larger pulley on it to get to the 400rpm pump speed. I pull 23" with mine and it handles it well without an additional fan. I have a 1.5hp motor on mine.

Thanks for the info. Yes I have the origonal 14 in pulley. I do have a heavy duty 1hp baldor 1750 rpm motor that I was hoping to use. 400 rpm at the pump should mean a 3.25 in pulley on the motor. The guy that I bought the pump from was insistant that I use mobil one synthetic automatic transmission fluid.

I have used amsoil compressor oil with good luck...

I run a 1 hp on my sp11, but I bet you will be fine with a 1hp on the sp-22

I run Dexron lll non synthetic ATF in mine. I change it often and haven't had any problems.
