Hi again ADK1 - Not so much which is the most popular - but - rather which would work the best for you with the amount of trees you plan to tap. With the 80 trees you mention - the 2' x 6' would probably be about right. As you already know - I have a home-made 2' x 5' and I just couldn't get enough sap thiis year to do a good boil with 55 trees. I now know it would take about 200 gallons of sap to start a boil and not having to chase it with water in a few hours. With my old 2' x 2' open pan -- 200 gallons would take two days to boil off. Another thing - my 2' x 5' is a flat bottom (no drop flues) and is natural draft (no forced air) and I burn wood. So If You have a 2' x 6' with dropped flues, and forced air around a fuel oil torch - You will really be a steaming away and looking for more sap--------Ah! The plans of Mice and Men when dealing with Mother Nature and Maple Trees---------fun though--

No, I will definatly burn wood, primarily pine and hemlock. No forced air. Would lvoe a 2x6 but probably cant afford it. I can expand to 100 taps easily and more if I really wanted to ask some folks up and down my road, there are alot of 2-3 bucket roadside maples.

But, for the first couple of years for sure, 80 single tree taps are what I will have. Trying to weigh the time I will have to put towards collecting and boiling with the time I will actually have. I wont be an every night boiler, maybe every other. so, thinking a 2x6 would be good. Really have no clue. I jsut know that a 2x3 would be too small. a 2x4 would probably work, especially if I got a blower unit

wow that is a good price. but the prices keep going up even for used . I am guessing now for a used 2x6 in good condition only a few years old with welded pans your looking at around $3-$4K closer to $3 if you find something under that your very lucky!!!
