I have a customer in my sawmill business who owns a Line-X franchise. This is the spray on coating used in pickup truck boxes. They are trying to find other uses for the coating. He says the coating is incidental contact food safe and potable water safe, and has the certifications to back it up. Could I use this in my old galvanized lead soldered sap storage tanks? He says I could build a tank out of wood and coat it and it would work too. It is a very tough coating.

I have seen some truck beds that have been sprayed with it and the joints that dont fully close will leak rust. I wonder if that is a possibility if the joint is totaly closed.

That would be great if it works. I think if you build something from wood it will have to be real sturdy so the seams don't move when it is full of liquid, or they might tear open. Try building a swimming pool first to see if it holds up.

incidental means very light contact. not storage or long term. so I wouldn't. but thats just me.

I am going to contact my local food inspector and find out. I think it would be really cool if I could make my own tank for hauling sap in my truck or behind my snowmobile.

...he says the coating is incidental contact food safe ..

That pretty much answers your question. Incidental food contact means that it is OK to be used where food material may splash onto the surface and then fall back into the food preparation area. It is NOT for meant for food material to be in prolonged contact (meaning more than a few seconds) with the material.

Ask him to show you the rating in writing.

Line X has a rough surface that may not clean up very well. It may be more hassle than it's worth if you can't scrub it out at the end of the season.

I love it as a bedliner. I have a rhino lining and I can throw any kind of crap in the back of my truck with no worries at all.

just get a plastic liner!!! make your wooden box and check US plastics they have lots of plastic liners that are food grade. I am sure they are way cheaper than rhino lining. and they disposable. not very "green" but disposable.
