So I was shopping in the store yesterday. and saw the "all natural log cabin syrup" 4% maple syrup and the usual corn syrup and thickeners...but here is the kicker... it was in a similiar to traditional maple syrup plastic jug, with a flip top cap!

don't think it should be in a maple syrup jug.

Back last summer our association was given a few sugarhill containers to look at that had a flip top lid. They had the normal seal under the lid but they also had a tape strip that was to go over the outside of the lid as a tamper indicator.

Nothing wrong with a flip top lid. Its better to have it come out with a little control. I hate hearing my 6 year old saying OOOPPPPS and look over and see 1/2 pint of syrup on his plate with a pancake floating in it:mad:

NO I agree nothing wrong with the flip top I like that part...but you guys missed the point that there was log cabin syrup(the fake stuff) in traditional maple syrup bottles.

just as long as it doesnt say PURE MAPLE SYRUP then they have the right to put it in any kind of jugs... but i agree with you the shouldnt have that crap in jugs that look similar to thye ones we sell. people taste that crap out of the syrup jug at the store and then we lose out cause people think its the real stuff cause its in a true maple syrup jug... if that makes sence? haha

What were they charging for the container of "All Natural" crap anyway?

It looks like they are trying to get their little piece of the pie. What amazes me is how someone can put certain wording on the container and up the price alittle and people start to think that it is something special and buy it.
1st you have to figure that there is people out there who have no idea how maple syrup is made and what is and ISN'T in it. SO they may see the 4% maple and think that that is how it is to be.

I agree that using the same container that we use to sell REAL maple syrup is a low blow, it is just a marketing ploy.

Near beer does it so if people are to stupid to read and get the crap well thats life. I have seen Gormet pancake syrup thats dark thick 4% maple with artificial flavor selling for more than the real stuff...........:(

I agree with you Red Maples.
I bothers me that they are so closely mimicking the real stuff. Alas, maple sugarers have not copyrighted or trademarked the old jug style.

The marketing dept at Log Cabin is pretty smart. The only reason they are putting their corn syrup in jugs is to confuse the consumer and minimize the difference between two very different products. Brilliant move on their part.

I think the only way to combat this is to educate consumers - one by one (sigh...). Log Cabin may be patting themselves on the back, but I think they've also opened themselves to be viewed as craven and duplicitous.

But to wax philosophical for a moment.... I think we need Log Cabin. They supply to the bottom of the market and make the real stuff so much better in every way. Really, they're the easiest act to compete against. They create the niche that we fill. Economically it makes a lot more sense for you all to produce a quality high-end product that can command top dollar.

I'm old enough to remember being ticked off when they started selling Vermont Maid.

It's real Maple Syrup for people who can't spell.

Hey Red I seen your favorite syrup in our local gracery store lol. Funny labeling on it for sure. Says all new on it and that there is no corn syrup in it but instead list ingredients for some other kind of syrup and also mention 4% maple does not say 4% maple syrup. A pint was selling for under 5 bucks. Now next to that jug was a 8 oz bottle of canadian syrup labeled 100% pure maple syrup extra thick and rich. Now that one has got me confused. It sure is thick. ingredients list nothing other than pure maple syrup so exacally how the heck is that syrup thick as sludge in that bottle without any sugar crystals in it is beyond me. Also no wheres on it was it graded and the price for 8 oz was almost 13 bucks. Next to that one was maple groves 100 % percent pure maple syrup that looked and acted like colored water in a bottle and for 12 oz it was around 9 bucks.

The "Extra Thick" syrup is a product made from pure maple syrup which has been altered with invertase to convert some of the sucrose to glucose/fructose, which crystallize at a higher density. In some states it cannot be sold as pure maple syrup (that was tried originally) as it exceeds the upper density limit. Some states don't have an upper limit, so it can be sold as maple syrup. It doesn't taste like maple syrup....it tastes like caramel. It isn't bad....just different.

I don't think its the same one because I one I saw said 4% maple, brown rice and corn syrup something as a thickener and an emulsifier if I remember correctly few other things.

Years ago one of the popular Peanut Butter makers was putting too much Lard in their product - To cut cost and to keep it from sticking to the roof of your mouth. The FDA finally set limits on the amount of peanuts that had to be in the product to call it Peanut Butter if below that it had to be called Imitation Peanut Butter. Wonder if the Bogus Maple Syrup Producers will ever be forced to call their product Imitation Maple Syrup?

This is a little off maple, but about 2 months before the Olympics in China, a Canadian Broadcast Corp (CBC) team was in China looking into various strange things.

They found one guy who was running a noodle making factory. Right beside were he was being interviewed were a couple of large trucks unloading used cardboard.

He was bragging that he had a recipe so good he could put 60% cardboard in his noodles and nobody could taste the difference. Yum Yum
