We picked up an older R.O. when we bought all the equipment someone had when he got out of the maple business: An Osmonics, OSMO 43 Series R.O. machine. This was manufactured in 1978 in Hopkins, Minnesota. The company no longer exists. It had non-standard membrane canisters so we replaced with a standard size to reduce the cost of membranes about four years ago.

Cleaning is not automated. We basically pump permeate (from the permeate tank) into an empty sap tank (not heated) and run the machine as if it's treating sap. Sometimes we do an acid wash and sometimes a caustic soda wash.

QUESTION: Is there a way to reverse flush membranes (R.O. or NF) with a machine like this? DO ANY R.O. MACHINES ON THE MARKET TODAY ALLOW YOU TO REVERSE FLUSH MEMBRANES? I maintain you can't reverse flush an R.O. membrane (even with new machines) while other people in our family say you can't properly clean a filter unless you reverse flush.

Your thoughts would be appreciated.
