Wow, thats alot of taps in a tree. Maybe there over tapping trees their going to remove? Or are all of them tapped in the same manor? Wonder how long the trees would last....

No, unfortunately MOST trees are tapped like this and even SMALLER trees that shouldn't even BE tapped :(

From the looks of the taps from other seasons the tree is about dead. Im thinking this is a joke.

I hope he's doing that damage to his own trees and not somebody elses. It's a shame either way to over tap like that.

I WISH this was a joke! We were driving by this woods one day and saw how badly over tapped it was and HAD to take pictures! And yes, it's also on vacuum :(

The guy doing this is either close to retirement, or embarking on a career in firewood sales.

Looks like this was not the 1st year - look at all the old tap holes as well. Yikes!

i got trees i tap like that, there ones i plan to thin in the next few years, why not get all the sap i can from them and if it kills them the chainsaw works just as well on standing dead wood as live!

There are more folk's out there like this guy than you realize. I've seen similar tapping practices, along with taps in 4-6" tree's!

I agree, it's a shame and there should be law's. Guy's like that give the rest of us bad reputations.

Mark does have a point if the tree is getting cut down in a year or two Have at it. The guy will sell the wood for lumber with all the tap stains:mad:

Holy tapholes, that is alot of taps. I feel sorry for those trees! Where in Wisconsin is this?

It looks to me like those trees will develop a whole block of dead wood and just waste away and in not too many years. One of my guys that I buy sap from said some kids tubed a woods up the road from him and they put 4-6 taps in every tree and was even tapping saplings. I have not seen it, but thats what he told me.

Whoever overtapped them that bad should have some sense put in them!

I feel guilty putting 2 small 5/16 taps per tree in on bigger trees. these are the 7/16 taps. yikes! Someone should inform him to check out traders for all his information needs......Thats one of our projects this year in fact, take off all our double taps and put those on new trees.

Just thinking, I read or heard at one time or another that the sap yeild goes down in each tap hole for each one you put into one tree, is this true? If it is, some of those taps aren't doing hardly anything.

Tim Wilmot (UVM Maple Extension at the Proctor Maple Research Center) has done research on that, and did quite a bit more this year. He'll have more coming out later this year.

Wow is about all I can say. Well maybe not, did anyone else notice that the lats are lower than the mains? Tubing is a new game for me but should they not be higher or atleast equal to the height of the mains?

Please someone in Wisconsin get this guy some health spout, he could double his tap count. the tree with four he could put in 8 health taps. this person could have the largest tap count in the state. Micro spouts, he could have the biggest camp in the world. that 10 inch tree could handle 20 micro spouts with ease!!!!!!! I have 350 micro spouts that I would be willing to donate to this producer if he can knock Lapierre from the top. Correct me if I'm wrong I heard he has the most taps at 165000. He may have to look for more trees with the guy in Wisconsin gunning for him.
