View Full Version : Maple syrup from maple sugar?

Is it possible to remake maple syrup from diluting maple sugar in hot water? I have a customer over seas that wants to save on water weight in the shipping and I'm just not sure if you can reconstitute it like that.

I know maple syrup is 66% sugar and the rest is water, so I'm guessing I would take 2/3's water and mix in 1/3 water. How do I reconcile the water measurement vs. a dry measurement? Is it even possible?

I'm throwing this one out to the experts! :)

I'm no expert by any means. I change products back to syrup on occasion. There are about 7 lbs of crumb in a gallon of syrup. If you were to boil up 4 lbs of water I think you would come close.

You would want to use a good quality water or distilled water that had not taste so it didn't affect flavor of syrup some.

I wonder what your additional costs to process syrup down to sugar would be compared to the additional cost to the overseas shipping?

Check out the international priority mail flat rate box. It's amazing how much you can fit in there.

You can fit three 1/2 gallons in the large flat rate box and two 1/2 gallons in the medium box.

My customer is buying 5 gallons at a time. I don't have a problem getting it to him, but he doesn't like the cost. I believe he's using it as a natural sweetener. I can get the sugar from Bascom's or somebody, so I'm not worried about the production cost - I'll just pass that along.

I'm not too sure that this is going to save him anything. If I do the math right, it'll cost him at least $53/gallon before shipping.

How much is the shipping on the large flat rock box international? Maybe I could send him 4 of those for cheaper than freight.

Up here you could boil several hundred gallons of syrup for the price to ship a gallon overseas. It would be about $100 dollars to mail a gallon of syrup. In 2001 it would have been $50 and then they raised the rates 100%. I mailed a coat over to France and it cost more then the coat did.

I believe Bascom's does just this. They ship granular sugar over seas. Some gets reconstituted as syrup. Google "Napa Trading" for more. It's been many years since I talked to Bruce about it.
