View Full Version : Value of 2x4 Homemade Evaporator

Well this was my first year making maple syrup and now it is time to expand. :)

I'm looking to sell the arch I built for this year but am a little unsure of its value. The arch is lined with 1" ceramic blanket and will be sold with 6' of double wall stainless steel chimney but will not come with grates or firebrick (reusing them). It has a 2x4 flat pan with dividers and ports on opposite corners fitted with tri-clover fittings. It also has a pre-heater, float valve, and homemade float box made out of a stainless steel steam tray. Overall the rig is a little rough around the edges but is functional. Below are pictures of the rig.

What do you guys think I should ask for it?

That's a sweet little rig. I love the float box. If it were mine, I'd ask for a grand.

Thats a nice little arch, I would try to get $800-$1000 for it, I dont think it will take you long to get rid of it!

I dig that float box! When you get a chance, post a close-up pic of it. Is it a 6" by 6" steam pan? Did you solder or weld a coupling onto the side of it or is it just threaded together?

As a buyer it would be worth $1400 to me. Compare it to a leader or Dominion & Grimm 2X4 without a preheater or float box. Discount a little for homemade and no firebrick and I have no problem with $1400.

I sold a simlar one ( 6'6" x 24") 3 years ago fo 900 cash.

It is a third size steam table pan with dimensions 6 7/8"x12 3/4"x6". The coupling is a weldless bulkhead homebrewers (another hobby of mine) use for converting kegs into kettles. You can get it here (http://www.northernbrewer.com/brewing/weldless-kettle-bulkhead.html).

Thanks for the input guys. I've got it listed on craigslist so hopefully I can get this thing sold so I can get to work on a new one.

That makes more sense. In the picture, it looks shorter. I was wondering how you got the float valve in there, but now I see you have plenty of room. Thanks!
